I'd like to allow my users to subscribe to watch a category when they sign up. A lot of people sign up for an account but are dismayed that they never notified of new threads.

I would like to add a link to the welcome email that says: if you want to get notifications from this forum, click here: [URL]. But the button is in Javascript.

What's the direct link?

You could just update the welcome email template to include a link to the forum category, then instruct them to click on the 'follow' button.
Alternatively you'd need a custom module with a 'new signup' listener that adds their _user_id and category id to the Forum follow_category table.
