solved Jamroom 5 --> 6 upgrade

Hello Jamroom team,
we have a few questions to Jamroom.

Topically we use the version 5 with many modules or also even to bought modules.
What exactly is the difference of version 5 on 6? When is the new Version online?

What does cost an Upgrade?

Can all modules be used by version 5 on 6?

Is it topical in such a way what is very irritating that we have to do update partially our design again "anew" high-level store with a module - is still exact with Jamroom 6? What must one make, so that own design is not headlined?

Must we adapt in general our design in Jamroom 6?

Many thanks for your time and feedback.
Sorry, if my English is perhaps bad.

Greeting from Germany.
Stefan

Jamroom 6 is currently in BETA:

We're making really good progress and Jamroom 6 NON BETA is scheduled to be released on November 28th.

It is free.

Yes.

I'm not clear on what you're asking here but I THINK you are asking if you will have to change your skin? The only real CHANGE between Jamroom 5 and Jamroom 5 in regards to templates is TIMELINE templates. If you have customized your jrAction templates, you'll need to work on them post-upgrade and bring in the new changes from Jamroom 6.

Your custom skin should work no problem on Jamroom 6 - you'll just need to make sure any custom Timeline templates are updated.

Let me know if that helps.

I have been a bit worried about all this myself. I assume that after JR6 comes out of beta, it will be a good idea for me to upgrade to it if only for the sake of not becoming outdated and unsupported on my platform.

--So you are saying Brian, that after upgrading, assuming i am still using my custom skin (built from ningja originally)...that my site should still look and function unchanged except for the timeline/activity feeds? ...and that I should then check my custom skin's jrAction_item_index.tpl ( the only "action tmpl in my custom skin) and compare it to the new jrAction version 6 module template and possibly synch the new changes to my custom skin?
I'm worried that my site will suddenly look and act weird and my members will be freaked out.

... I want to keep the various customizations I've made over the past 18 months to show and not show certain things in my site's main page Activity feed.

strumelia, If you're worried setup a dev site on a new domain and import your site there, then upgrade that to JR6 first so you know about any weirdness before dropping it on your community.

That will give you breathing room in case there are any adjustments that need to be made, you can make them on the dev site then throw the whole site away once you've done it on your main site.

Suspect there will be very little that causes issue, but the unknown can cause uncertainty. We're here if anything goes drastically wrong. :)

Should note that your custom templates will have to be downloaded and them uploaded to the jr6 FollowMe skin...at least thats what i took away from it.
FollowMe will be a stock skin- then you have to add your template mods that the skin folder

Possibly, if you choose to use the FollowMe skin, but its not mandatory with JR6. JR6 will work with all previous skins.

Michael, thanks for that- it's very reassuring. :)
Recently I began building a new 2nd site after cloning my basic live site into a temp domain (after first upgrading my server to handle the size of the clone), so happy to say i now know how to follow your suggestion and test jr6 on my dummy site first...so glad I learned how to do that process a couple months ago already! At least I'd see any obvious drastic problems before doing it to my live site. And I guess any little problems can be tweaked back in line one at a time.

Question-- Is there an easy way to set a test cloned site to make sure that NO notifications go out to ANY of the (cloned) members I've left in place? It'd be much easier to do some tests on the site if I don't 'reset' the whole site and have no members or content at all there I'm thinking... ? (I'd love to be able to post stuff anywhere on the test site without worrying that some hapless member will get a notification saying a new post has been made on their item- and then get sent to a dummy site where they can't log in)

Curtis- thanks very much! but I won't be using the new FollowMe skin, and probably not its new Timeline functions either...at least for the foreseeable future.

Yes - ACP => Mailer module and select that all emails are dumped into the Debug Log instead of being actually sent. This is the first thing I done on any development/test setup.

Just want to add that our goal with Jamroom 6 is that it is as easy of an upgrade as going from Jamroom 5.2 to 5.3 - basically "super easy" :)

The only thing you will want to do slightly different in this case is to make sure and run an INTEGRITY CHECK with "repair modules" checked AFTER you upgrade - this will ensure all the low level DB stuff has been updated properly.

Other than the Timeline template, it should be a very smooth upgrade.
