solved dead links (email notifications, hyperlinks not active?)

Hello all,

I received this from a member today:

"When I was on the old site, I got emails about all subjects that I was active on them.
Email notifications had a link that I clicked it and then, I went on the subject directly and easily.
Now, I get email notifications every day, but links don't work.
I must go on the site and search them.
It is very difficult and I must spend a lot of time for finding subjects.
Please, find a way that links in email notifications work well.
Thanks,"

I have not had this issue with email notifications I am receiving.
Have any of you encountered this and do you have any suggestions as to what questions I should ask, or tips on how to resolve?

Thanks,

We are using JamRoom 6, Ningja skin, and we have the
http://(our site)/mailer/admin/global settings to HTML

Not sure if this is any help to anyone?

I've gotten a small handful of notifications over the past two or three weeks where the link doesn't work- i think takes me to a page saying "bad link" or something to that effect. I didn't give it much thought because it's only occasional. If it happens again i'll post a copy of the email and a screenshot here. (I'm on JR5)

Ok, found one in my trash.
Here is what the emailed notification said:

....I learned my first dozen tunes or so from Bing's videos, it felt like my dulcimer life had come full circle with him filming me to be in one.
P.S. My new glasses should be coming soon, so I'll be able to spend more time at the computer.

That link 'should have' taken me to a comment on the comment wall of my private moderator Group.
Instead it takes me here:

where it says "Bad Request".
Note the only diff in the url of where I wind up is the final "-" dash in the link text.

Here's a notification for the same comment wall new comment, with a link that DOES function properly (private group so I suspect you may only see a notice to apply to join the group, but the link works):

....Dulcimerica-- how cool, Dusty!

Thanks, Strumelia,

We could opt to turn the html (default) off, but would much rather have attractive notices sent... don't want to switch to text only.

Is anyone else noticing issues with this?

This is not the correct URL, and the reason it shows as this is that you have enabled OPEN and CLICK tracking in Mailgun, which makes Mailgun rewrite the URLs in any sent emails - this will interfere with Jamroom's tracking. Go in to your Mailgun control panel:

https://mailgun.com/sessions/new

go to your Domain and make sure "Click Tracking" and "Open Tracking" are OFF.

Hi Brian,

That's not the issue with our site. I'll try to share a copy of an email tomorrow.
Our settings looked like this when I logged in to MailGun:

I'll try to explain in details our challenge.
We use an HTML version of our email notifications.

I attached a screenshot of email notification which I receive. There are two links, but they are "dead" - it means, I cannot click on them to open a post.

I also received from a friend a link (he allowed me to share this info with you):
http://pastebin.com/u7fDhqea

He said that in the line 144 link tags are missed.

Any tip where we can make some corrections to have links included in these notifications live?
Or maybe we should open a ticket with that challenge.

Thank in advance for your help.

Hyperlinks in emails will be hyperlinked by the email client - that's not something JR controls.

Let me know if that helps.

Sigh...
The challenge is when she (and several other unhappy members of our site) CLICKS on the hyperlink that DOES come through, it leads to a page not found.

Here is an example.

http://lewwwp.com/community/main-forum/12485/in-which-case-we-can-use-an-infinitive-after-the-verb-to-be-am-is-are-was-were#cm228989

This link takes me to a "Page not found," too.

This is not an isolated incident.

Many links come through 'looking right' (and generated by our Jamroom site) but then do not prove to be correct links?

Maybe this is related to the beta Jamroom 6?

The URL in that link is wrong - it should be:

http://lewwwp.com/community/main_forum/12485/in-which-case-we-can-use-an-infinitive-after-the-verb-to-be-am-is-are-was-were#cm228989

Note the UNDERSCORE and not a DASH. Have you recently changed the URL on the Forum module to be "main-forum" instead of "main_forum"?

Sigh...
Maybe this is something I'm not familiar with, but I hope you know we're working hard to get fixes out as soon as we can. I understand you might be frustrated - we're working to get JR6 out of beta as soon as possible. Thanks!

This is the case. You have the forum's module url set to 'main-forum'. Change it to 'main_forum' and it should fix things. Dashes are used to replace invalid url characters when parsing them for links so it looks link having one there in the first place confuses things.
Try that and let us know. We'll maybe have to disallow dashes in that field.
Thanks

Now I'm trying to resolve this challenge with my own email provider.
But I don't think other members will know what to do.
I guess we should back to the text version of our email notifications.

This has nothing to do with your email provider. It is your email CLIENT. For example, I use the Email app on my Mac. You might use something like Outlook, or a 3rd party email CLIENT.

If your client sees an email come in that has a URL in it, it will make it clickable automatically. I'm not aware of any modern email client that does not do this.

I just sent myself a test message with a test URL in it an see no issues.

I check my emails using my email provider's website (that's why I asked them for help).

But it might be difficult to tell/to ask most of our members to change their email clients only to have "live" links from our site. Many of our members have problems with basic English.

Something to rethink.

Your members are not likely to have an issue - the majority are likely using email clients that turn URLs into hyperlinks.

Also note that this is not related to sending email as HTML email - you'd have the same issue on plain text email as well. Could be your email providers web based email client just doesn't handle URLs in email properly.

We used the text version of our email notifications earlier, and there wasn't any problem with links. They worked.
I see a text version of emails I receive from Jamroom. The links are not blue, but they work. When I click on them, I'm redirected to the post.

It's not only my own problem. I received a few complaints of this challenge from our active members. I don't want them to give up on us. I must find a good solution which will work for each of our members.

Thank you

I just sent myself a test message from your site, and I'm not even seeing any HTML at all - even though send as HTML is checked, there are no HTML headers or footers, so something is wrong on your site at the template or module level. I'll see if I can spot what the issue is and let you know.

Sorry - I misspoke. The reason I was not seeing the HTML is that the email address I was testing with was NOT on your system (therefore it cannot create the preferences footer) and so it forces it to plain text.

I've just created an account for myself on your site and I see no problems with how Jamroom is sending email.

I must learn a few more synonyms of the word "awesome/amazing."

Cool

I checked it, and now when I receive a message from Discussions or from a Group, I see "live" links.
Thank you

I guess I ask for too much, but do you know how to make these "live" in Private Notes? If not, then we need to live without them. You did a LOT.

Thank you again

Its up to your users how they want to be notified of things (email or private note). Thet can set that in their Notifications sections.

Oh, my!

Please, Brian, everyone, I apologize for any miscommunication I've caused by my usage of 'sigh'. It is a family thing. Several of my family members use this word liberally, in all sorts of situations.

Please note that I've never used it here to mean a direct frustration with the

Quote: brilliant, wonderful, awesome, amazing, fantastic

team here at Jamroom, nor toward any of the other JamRoomers.

It's a word I use to mean many things, and it's usage here is an indication of how 'inept' I feel I am, of how I wish I weren't submitting so many help requests.

We have many very pleased members today after this fix you've managed.
--
I will do my best not to use the 'sigh' word again here in the forums.

Apologies,
Holly
