solved What causes a Youtube video to show the embed code instead of the video?

I tried to post a video in a group discussion (see screenshot):
http://empathcommunity.eliselebeau.com/groups/group_discuss/282/the-healing-mindset-a-visual-meditation

This is the Youtube url (with id xhrZL8vHICs)
The Healing Mindset: a Visual Meditation

Instead of displaying the video (I have Media Url Scanner), it displays the smarty code.
[jrEmbed module="jrYouTube" youtube_id="xhrZL8vHICs"]

I ran the Youtube integrity check.

Why is that?
Thanks!

The URLScan module doesn't use the code

[jrEmbed module="jrYouTube" youtube_id="xhrZL8vHICs"]

That is for the jrEmbed module, if you want to use the URLScan feature, just paste the YouTube link in the post.
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/modules/2894/media-url-scanner

If your trying to embed, make sure you've got the jrEmbed module installed.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, I still don't get it...

I only want to use Youtube for videos. I don't want to "host" videos because it will bloat my size.
I disabled the module Video.
I enabled the Editor Embedded Media (for images)
I want URLScan to show the video in the post.

If a user posts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhrZL8vHICs
, it does not show the video on my site. So I thought they had to use the Youtube "Embed" menu item.

Can you clarify this?

Thanks!

Have you installed and enabled the URLScan module?

You need to do that in order for the url to be converted to show the video.

Your
[jrEmbed module="jrYouTube" youtube_id="KehmUMERlJQ"]
link seems correct- that's the kind of link I get when embedding a YT video into a discussion post.
Did you make sure to ENABLE the Embed media function for all the quotas you want to allow that ability for, in the jrEmbed module Global Config tab? see here:
(hmmm, I can't seem to attach either a jpg or a .png of my screenshot... ! Let me try again in a new post...

trying again to attach a .jpg ...

OK, anyone from the JR Team can figure out why i suddenly cannot attach any images to my posts here?
I've now tried the image asa .jpg, a .png, a .tif, and a .bmp. Keep getting errors telling me I need to attach only images that are .jpg, .bmp, .png, etc. Frustrating.

Q:What causes a Youtube video to show the embed code instead of the video?
A:Usually its because the quota the profile is in doesn't have "Convert Embed Tags" checked at:
ACP -> MODULES -> QUOTA CONFIG -> (Selected quota) -> Active Text Formatters : Convert Embed Tags

There are other possible reasons, but check that first.

The Embed module and the url scanner module do different things.

Docs: "Media Url Scanner"
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/modules/2894/media-url-scanner

Docs: "Editor Embedded Media"

What is the file name of the file you're trying to attach? can you copy+paste the file name here please. Wondering if it has any strange characters in it or upper case letters or anything else weird about it.

You win! The "group" quota did not have this enabled. Sigh.
Thanks!

Thanks strumelia. I really struggle understanding how the video and images work. My server is bloating really fast and I'm trying to keep the size of the uploads down. I guess I need the jrEmbed for images, otherwise members cannot add images to their posts. But I don't want them to embed video. But they can post a link to youtube and shows the video with URLScan.

sigh. I'll keep poking at it.

Media takes up space, space costs money/month so structure you're site so its sustainable.

Embedding youtube via jrEmbed or adding a youtube url and converting via jrUrlScan cost you nothing, but you'll get the adverts.

Elise, a space saving tip:
Under your Core Modules, go to Image Core, then Tools/resize item images.
Pick the images residing on your site in various locations (dropdown menu) and reduce them in size to whatever. I've used a max of 960 pixels max for the images in every feature. If you go through them all, it will downsize all the accumulated images that your ning members added over the years...every time they added a 5MB photo of their dog...poof! you can reduce the size by half or 3/4 and it still looks the same, to me anyways. I comb through all my site images every 6 months or so to do this reducing.
There are several other ways to limit the size and numbers of items your members can add to your site.

I suspect you have by now realized just how much more design options, total control, and flexibility you now have on your Jamroom site ...as opposed to your old Ning site. ;)

Thank you for this, Strumelia. I'm going to cut the size of my site in half! A little scary to click "Resize" as the changes are irreversible and my site is heavily image based, with students sharing close-up photos of stitching to get feedback. I don't want to risk making them too small for clear viewing. But I'll definitely shrink them a bit... once I get up the courage. Great tip!

Les- you can run the image downsizer tool with the 'test run' checkbox checked first for each feature to see if it's going to be a lot or a little. Also, in your case I'd run it with a high size reset pixel number first, and look at the results, before downsizing the images further- maybe a step at a time until you are satisfied with the storage savings on your server.
