Hi everyone!
Is there a way to limit the privacy settings for members? When they set it for private then all of their posts disappear and that has become an issue for my site. Can we lock it down to just Global?
Thanks!

Hi Perry, you can set each quota for if you want to allow them to be able to set their own privacy or to have them set to globally visible.
Go to your Profiles Module, then the Global Config tab... and set each quota's privacy settings as you like here:

Strumelia,

Darn! I looked at that page a dozen times, but the one thing I didn't realize to do was to change it to profiles and notice to uncheck the box!

Thanks for the 411! You're the best!

For some reason, I still have members who can change their profile privacy settings. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm not seeing an issue on my dev site.

Make sure you've selected the quota the user in question is in when your changing the privacy settings in the ACP > Profiles > Profile > Quota Config section.

Are you sure those members are in a quota that you have UNCHECKED the 'show privacy options' box for?

Hi Doug,

I made sure that was set right.

Hi Lisa,

Yes, they are all in the "example" quota. That is why I am a bit confounded.

If you are viewing a profile update page as admin you will still see the privacy options.
Also, if the profile is themselves an admin they will see the field.
Only if they are ordinary users and in a quota with that field disabled will they not see it.

I realize that Paul, but I have ordinary users who are changing their privacy options all the time. I just checked on my test account, and I couldn't do it (no options available)... so there must be a glitch in the system

I've just logged into your site as ordinary user 'pasher' (in the example quota) and am not seeing the field to change my privacy. Are you sure that members who are still able to change their privacy status are in quotas with this field disabled?

Never mind. For some reason he was in the community quota. Now I have to check all my membership. I am not sure how that happened.

That user is in the Master Admin group, so you should see the privacy field. Check the "Account" tab section when modifying the profile.

So when you login as 'jdychn' you see the privacy select field? If so let me have her password so that I can check it out.

You're right, somehow I was not looking at the same profile as you posted. Sorry!

This is marked 'solved' now...but I'm curious- what was causing the problem ?

its marked as solved because the current conversation is tacked on to the end of a previously solved question. Would have been better to open a new thread. Note the jump in conversation date from 2 months ago to 2 days ago.

I really don't think there is an issue here. If you login as the user, you should not see the privacy settings since that is how you have the quota setup. If you are logged in as an admin, you'll see the privacy setting no matter what the quota settings are set to.

Try logging in as a regular user and see if the privacy settings are showing.

Hope this helps!

Ah, interesting.
I'm wondering if the following is maybe what's going on?...just a theory:
Maybe when Perrie first asked about not allowing members to set their own privacy (let's say for example in her 'regular member' quota), a bunch of them in that quota had ALREADY set their profiles to Private. So then when she adjusted her site settings to not SHOW the privacy setting options to all the members in that quota...it did just what it was supposed to do- it then HID the privacy setting options from all those members. However maybe it doesn't actually reset their options back to public (the site default)...it just takes away their future ability to change their options by HIDING them.
Thus, could it be that these members Perrie is still seeing as 'private' simply had set themselves to private BEFORE she hid their privacy setting options from them?

Lisa,
I think that is a really excellent theory. That member in question most def had their privacy set to private and I had to change it. I had that happen with at least 4 other members. Your explanation is the only one to make sense.

I think maybe we just misunderstood the issue.

I've not tested it, but it could be as @strumelia stated.

This is correct. Unchecking the "Show Privacy Options" would make the privacy options not visible. It would not change anybodies privacy settings. The option still would be visible to the admin user. The admin user can still change that users privacy settings.
