Auto-follow set after posting in a discussion. Other options?

Here is a complaint from a member:
"If I post in a discussion, it automatically turns the button Follow yellow on and I get notifications until I turn it back off. If I don't want notifications, but I want to post, I have to make my post, then always turn off the yellow button. So, it is always a two step process when making a post. I almost don't even want to post, because of the hassle of always having to unfollow the thread."

So that's the issue. BUT, when I look at profile accounts Notification TAB Options (and the ?help descriptions) there are two notofications checkboxes that I cannot understand the difference between them, and I can't figure out whether they have something to do with what my member complained about.
Please see my screenshot and help me understand the diff between these two options. The two have confused me for some time.

My goal for my members is not to turn off all notifications in discussions they are purposely following- but rather just to not have everyone set to be 'auto-following' a discussion just because they post in it. I would like them to have to purposely click the Follow button to yellow if they want to receive notifications in a discussion...whether they posted in it or not.

P.S. even when I CREATED this discussion here in this forum, I had to purposely click the Follow button to yellow in order to Follow my OWN discussion...we dont get set to auto-follow here in the JR forum.

The difference is one is discussions, the other is forums.

Discussions are in groups, forums are not.

Discussion:
your-site.com/strumelia/group_discuss/1164/adding-belts-or-toerh

Forum:
your-site.com/forums/forum

As far as I'm aware there is no auto-follow setup on either of the systems. It would be my preference to have it working that way as that makes the most sense to me, but I don't think it ever got implemented.

Let me do a couple of tests, as a regular member. Then I'll get back here.

Hmm... I see that as a regular member, i am not automatically getting set to 'Follow" any forum or group discussion merely because I post in it. Just as you said, Michael.
I'm wondering why this member keeps saying she has to purposely turn OFF the yellow Follow button each time she posts in a discussion, or else she keeps getting unwanted notifications... ?
And then, I STILL have some of my moderators and regular members who have ALL notifications set to ON/EMAIL... and they still aren't getting all their notifications properly. Yet they get all emails from me just fine, coming from the from same site address.
Driving me nuts, really.

I can check it out, but need some specifics. Who is seeing what happen where. Then I'll go look in your setup to see if I can see anything unexpected.

I'm getting some details from the two members reporting this, Michael. Then I'll report back here. I appreciate your help! Let me get some additional details first.

I have a question while I'm trying to figure out what's going on with this notification stuff-

What happens if a member has set all their Notification settings to "Do not notify", and they click the Follow button for a forum discussion? Will they not get notifications for that discussion, despite having marked it to 'follow'?

nope, no notifications.

If they have their notifications turned off nothing will get through, thats the master setting.

The only one higher is the unsubscribe link that blocks an email address from ever receiving any notifications from the system. That link is included in each email so if its ever clicked it will turn it all off.

And if a member does that, can they 'undo' it simply by going in to their Notifications tab and resetting things to receive notifications for certain things again if they want?
