Searching the datastore - some search terms cause problems

Searching in the Databrowser from an Admin profile, certain search terms give "no results found" and the search-term field now showing an unprintable character, where before it was % followed immediately by one or more characters.

Example: Searching Item galleries for
gallery_caption:% cable%
returns 4 items.
Searching for
gallery_caption:%cable%
returns no results and the search terms now look like
gallery_caption:ble%

I've tried this with various alphabetic characters after the % sign. Some work, some don't.
%a% works, but %ab% doesn't.
%ay% and % day% work but not %day% or %day %

Same whether there is a key in the search terms or not.
Same whether there are any results or not.

Putting a space between the % and the first character always fixes the problem.

Is there some simple reason for this? Am I doing something wrong?(it wouldn't surprise me).

Was this a silly question?

I have another, so I may as well be stupid in the same place twice.
How do you search for an item Id in the datastore?
For example in Image Galleries, I want to find a specific image Id number. Putting the number in direct or in quotes or Id:number with/without percentage signs doesn't work. I know there must be an easy way to do this but I just can't see what and I have searched the JR documentation.

You can use _item_id:X to search by the item id, where X is the actual item id number.

I know there is an issue with using a space in the search and I think Brian already knows about it and I believe he is working on it.

When you say "searching the data store" are you using the public view search panels or maginfying glass for your search, or doing this in you ACP?

For visitors to my website, I would like to be able to give a simple, complete explanation on how to use the search fields, stating what can and cannot be done with our system.

Maybe this exists somewhere in the support forums or documentation. I'll keep looking.
