Notification problem

I've got an admin user who is experiencing the followiing problem :-

"Dave, John and Karen have commented on a topic.
I then start following it.
Then George, Stan and Shirley post a comment.
I get notified when Dave, John and Karen comment on this topic but not when George, Stan and Shirley comment."

Anyone else experiencing this ?

Cheers

Dave

Great explanation of what the issue is, thanks.

I'll get setup to see if I can recreate it.

are you talking about the groups discussion module or the jrForum module?

I am still experiencing 'some' members having irregular notification results, so it's possible this is at play on my site as well. I myself seem to be having no notification problems though, so it's a bit hard to test. I am Following this thread.

I have asked for support on this too. I had not considered that the notifications are only for people who were already in the discussion when it was followed, and I'll try to check that. As @strumelia says, it's not easy to test - I don't have any problems myself.

Some members have noted that they only get notifications if they are following the person who commented, as well as following the group discussion.

Could be this that your seeing:
* when a user is watching the group discussion they will be notified when a new post is added to the discussion. They will only be sent one notification.

So if there is a hot discussion that tom is watching
* tom writes a post on the discussion, then closes the browser
* bill writes a reply
* greg writes a reply
* sally writes a reply
* dave writes a reply

tom will only get ONE email saying there are more replies to the post.

If tom goes and reads the discussion that one limit is reset to zero, so if he goes away again and there are more replies, he will receive another email.

The possible situation at a guess:
* an email was sent out to your users, but they didn't click on it or visit the discussion, a few days later they do visit the discussion again and find that there have been comments every day for the last 5 days. They check their email for the last 4 days and see no notifications and think "the system is not sending me emails even though I am watching."

--edit--
I'll add this to the message that gets sent out:
Quote: There may also be other replies, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the discussion again.

Who would have guessed? Gotta say this seems like a weird arrangement, especially since Forum discussion notifications are not set up that way, only Group threads, correct?
Guessing it would be difficult to change that?

The added message in the notification will definitely be helpful.

Michael- does it reset by merely closing a browser, or does logging in and out of the site come into play? What if one stays logged in?
What if one leaves the browser on, but clicks away from the site while staying logged in? What if one logs out and clicks to a different site but leaves the browser on? Oy, trying to understand how it works/triggers.

Page refresh. Refresh the page and your view count goes back to zero and you'll get another notification. I'm in the process of also resetting the notification if you write a comment too.

This should be sorted out in jrGroupDiscuss ver 1.1.4 which is in the marketplace now.

Michael, thank you but I really need some clarification about this please. I have to be able to intelligently answer my members who keep reporting to me about 'missing notifications'. All my members are thinking there are bugs in the system, and I can't be sure either. Am trying to understand exactly how it works so I can figure out if there's a bug or not when these things keep coming up. And they do keep coming up.

michael:Page refresh. Refresh the page and your view count goes back to zero and you'll get another notification. I'm in the process of also resetting the notification if you write a comment too.
-When you say "you'll get another notification" after your view count goes back to zero- I assume you mean only for the NEW posts happening AFTER you refresh the page. If so, that still will leave various posts hanging without notification. Members sometimes wait for a particular response from a member they are asking a question of...and this could mean that particular response just goes unnoticed for a while.
I think my members would choose to receive a notif. EVERY time there is a post or comment on their 'followed' item or thread. They were used to that on Ning and that's why they now keep reporting that they are 'missing' some notifications. Not sure I could even make them understand this current system.

michael:
This should be sorted out in jrGroupDiscuss ver 1.1.4 which is in the marketplace now.

Can you please tell me what exactly is sorted out? The changelog says: "Notification might not be sent out for new messages to groups if both users are online at the same time."...sorry but- does this either change or have something to do with the 'refresh page' issue you described above? I'm just not getting this. Need more coffee.
I appreciate your help and time.

You mean I would get a notif. if someone else wrote a comment ...where? On my video? In a Group's Comment Wall of a group I belong to? In a Group discussion (which is really an item that people 'comment on') that I am 'following'? Thanks for clarifying...

@Michael - This clarification is helpful. I had no idea it worked that way. Further clarification as @strumelia has requested would be even more helpful.

Most of our members stay logged in.

"Both members on-line at the same time" doesn't mean they will both be viewing the same discussion, so it seems odd that the notification may not be sent out under those circumstances.

Our members want to get a notification for every update to a discussion (unless they un-follow it), and they would like a link in the notification to take them to the update.

It would be hard to find an update to the discussion if it was a REPLY to someone else's comment, and you didn't get a notification for it. The reply may appear way down the discussion thread.

I look forward to hearing more about the ver 1.1.4.

CLARIFICATION, the way its working now:
---------------------------------
* when a user is watching the group discussion they will be notified when a new post is added to the discussion. They will only be sent one notification.

This notification message will include this text:
Quote: There may also be other replies, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the discussion again.

So if there is a hot discussion that tom is watching
* tom writes a post on the discussion, then closes the browser
* bill writes a reply
* greg writes a reply
* sally writes a reply
* dave writes a reply

tom will only get ONE email saying there are more replies to the post until he visits the group discussion again (page refresh) or posts a new comment. Either a page refresh or posting a new comment will set him up to receive a new notification of posts.
---------------------------------

Need to ask the others about changing it to a mail every response. You want an option for that at the system level?

"You want an option for that at the system level?"

Yes please- my members are confused and they feel like they are only sometimes getting notifications. I'd like to set my site-wide option to make sure all my members get a notif. with EVERY new post on a Group discussion they are 'following'.
We are talking Group discussions here.
What about Forum discussions?- what's the current notif.setup with those?

That would be logical, and good. :)

I'm getting regular reports of 'missing' notifications from my members, and the way it's set up now, i have little way of knowing whether there's really a 'missing' problem, or whether it's just the current setup at work...which my members are never going to understand.

Its just waiting for some eyes on it by the other guys, then it can be released. My concern is that its a setting by the site administrator, rather than the users themselves choosing how many emails they receive.

That's a system level design decision, so need to check its what we are going with.

Yes, totally understood. :)

The way I see it, with a new setup, the members will still choose to receive notifications on new activity in discussions they 'follow'...or not.
The current setup doesn't really let them 'choose how many emails they receive' anyway, since they can't choose whether to receive only one notification or a notification for each new post. That been chosen for them with the current setup. We know they want to recive emails on things they are following, and they'll still have the ultimate choice to unfollow any discussion, right?

My members are expressing to me that they are dismayed (or more accurately they think something's not working right) to not be receiving a notifc's for every new post on things they have chosen to 'follow', so maybe that in itself is expressing their choice/preference, and it'll be better to give them that. As long as members don't start getting emails for everything no matter if they are following it or not...!

The good thing about doing a change like this for both Group Discussions and Forum Discussions is that it will help us admins pinpoint when there actually is a glitch in the notification system, as opposed to what I;m getting now, which is I suspect a mishmash of real glitches and functions that the members THINK are glitches- and the problem of us hunting down which of the two they really are.

I haven't either. Members tell me you only get your one notification after you POST to the discussion, not after you 'visit' or refresh the page. *Edit: Logging out/in again resets too.

I'm really delighted to get this enhancement. It is going to make such a difference to the social side of our site. The Groups thrive on communication. Many thanks to JR for listening.

So excited to get these new options! I've implemented them and hope to get positive responses from my members soon.
I myself noticed yesterday after setting the Groups one, that i suddenly am getting many more notifications than before. This is what my members want, so I just need to see how they like it and whether it's working correctly.

Thank you so much for doing this for us!!!

Check out the new version and report back. We upgraded to it here on jamroom.net this morning.

There was a bug in the setting of the id's of the notification system about who gets notified.

Thanks for helping me locate it, it was very easy to miss.

Aha, so our members weren't nuts after all!

So much appreciated the work you have done in responding to our needs and also in then finding the little bug that was causing an additional 'mystery' problem in discussions in both groups and forums.
