We've got the 2 following users : 'John S.' (note the full stop) and 'John S'

When the URL to their profiles are generated the full stop is removed (as it should be) but this results in both having the same URL !!

Tricky, and not much we can do as its the way JR works.
Can you persuade one of them to change their profile name?

That's what we are doing but if usernames and profilenames where restricted to alphanumerics along with space and hyphen then that should solve the problem.

Also for example users who choose names with underscores_ in them result in their profile not being visible or findable. I just had to hunt down a user like that yesterday and remove their name's underscore so they would 'come back from the dead'. I think months ago Soaring Eagle had an issue with using a peace sign in his user name -as admin.

The user should not be able to create an account with an existing account already using that URL - they should get an error on signup. The profile_url value is checked to ensure it is unique. Could it be that the profiles were imported and bypassed that check?

Very likely. I'll get a check built into the NingImport module so going forward this doesn't happen.

I've got this too.. "Amanda H." and "Amanda H" but it's the same person.
The Amanda H. (with dot) was the original Ning import. They had different email addresses and profile pics. She reported problems getting into her account, including not seeing any tabs on the profile page and her profile showing as "offline".

I deleted the "Amanda H" profile - it had no activity on it and I assumed the user had created it by mistake, and that it was causing ambiguity. However, she still can't access her account.

Her account and profile name are the same (Amanda H.), she has the same profile picture for both, her link is @amanda-h without the dot of course. See attached screenshot for profile page, on which I can see the tabs, but no profile picture. the comments are out of order and the first 2 are from Amanda H. herself, who also is a follower on this profile.

1) Can I fix it, or is it so messed up that I should delete this profile and start again with a valid account/profile name?

2) I have another user with two spaces in her profile name "Susan Sprigg". I think this was a Ning import. If I remove the space from the profile name and/or account name, will it affect the account data in any way (galleries, groups, discussions etc,) ?

I'd appreciate advice - I don't want to nullify anyone by accident.

Just had a new user register with the user name kxxxx@potomactutors.com (i.e. her email address. Profile name, user name and email address are all the same on this user's account. Shouldn't this be rejected on sign-up?

1: shouldn't be able to happen. (except maybe via an import process, not sure there). When you signup the email needs to be unique or you will get prompted with "that username is already taken". adding a dot to the username "five" and "five." makes no difference, the error will still be "That User Name is already being used - did you already create an account previously?"

2: the unique identifier is the the profile_id which is a number. You can change the users profile name after the account has been created and no harm will be done. They will keep their same profile_id number so all the content will be still on their profile after their name has been changed.

@michael, thank you for that. I'll change the names.

The Amanda H./H is now fixed by deleting one of those users. They were both imported from Ning.

Names containing underscore are not recognised (click from Profiles list and get Not Found), so I would support the request to restrict names to alpha-numeric and hyphen.

I had two ning members who were imported, with underscores in their names- as I mentioned above, this made their profiles 'invisible'. I found them through a data search and when I removed the underscore from their account user name in JR, all was well.

I also had two members imported from ning who had inadvertently typed in two spaces in the middle of their name years ago when originally joining up on ning. This double space of course carried over to Jamroom...but when they innocently typed their name to log in, they could not log in. None of us realized it was because they were not typing in the two spaces...until I finally noticed it. Those of us testers who copy/pasted their username (along with that extra space) were fine and could log in as them, but those who manually typed it in (usually the member themselves) were refused. Once I removed the extra space from their JR username, again all was well. It didn't ever present a problem for them on ning because on ning you enter your email address +password, not your username +password...to log in. ;D

This check has been added to the latest NingImport module now in the marketplace.
