Who determines when a profile is active or not active? (and related questions)

Today I saw actual people join my Jamroom network for the first time. But I cannot seem them in the page that displays all profiles. I can only see them in the ACP Profile Browser.

In each case, I see this message "This profile is not active and is only visible to admin users and the site owner".

This does not tell me why the profile is not active. Questions arise...

1. Is it because each new member chose not to make his or her profile active?

2. Is it because new members cannot make their profiles active themselves?

When I look at the profile description, there is a check box where I (as site owner and admin) can make the profile active.

3. Is me the checking this box the only way to make a new profile active, and visible to the public?

4. In the Global Configuration panel for profiles, I do not see any option to make all new profiles active on sign-up, by default. Nor is there any option of this sort in the Quota set up (as far as I have seen).

For me, not having such a default option is not a problem. I want the chance to see and approve each profile before it becomes public. But...

5. What does the newly signed-up, potential member see?

6. Is there an automatic message telling the new member that his or her profile is not active, and that it will be reviewed for approval by the site owner or administrator?

If not, how can I set up an automatic message:

7. ...for newly signed up members who have not yet been approved? (an approval pending message)?

8. ...for newly approved members (telling them what further steps they can take, now that their membership is approved?

9. Is there any way for the new member to send a message to the site owner or administrator to ask about the sign-up process?

Thanks

Presumably you have Jamroom set up to approve new signups? In that case, new users will get an email advising them of the situation, then another when you approve/disapprove them.

I am not sure exactly.

The system is letting them sign-up, but none of them created active profiles.

I do not know if this because they couldn't (no option given?), or because they did not see or understand the 'profile active' checkbox.

Does checking the 'profile active' checkbox represent the 'approval' process in Jamroom?

If so, then I might eventually change the form language to "approve profile" rather than "profile active".

Thanks

Why don't you try signing up to your own system? At least you would then know how your system works when handling signups.

PJ, these settings are mostly found in your User Accounts module, especially in the tabs of Global Config and Quota Config. Go over all those settings and read the little "?" help tips. It's obvious that you currently have it set for "admin validation"... you must approve the new members before their profile and membership becomes active.

Look in your ACP -> dashboard to see the Pending Members- waiting for your approval before they become active and are then able to post and be seen by other members. You can approve them from there in the dashboard, or simply check that 'active' profile box you saw to approve them. Same thing.

Ultrajam is right- log OUT, then go through the process of creating a new member yourself- using a new (working) email and PW and name. You'll then see how a new member sees the process, and if there are glitches to fix in the process. Keep that test member- it's a handy way of logging in to see what your members see and experience. As an admin, you will always see some things that normal members do NOT see, and that can sometimes be confusing, until you sign in as a test member to check it.

Thanks. I have done that in the past, but as the system changes, I should delete my current test-user account, and the then sign up again to create a new test-user and see what happens (I have a limited number of email addresses, so this will be easier than setting up new email accounts to create new test users).

Also, I need independent test users who will arrive at the network with no prior knowledge at all, and who can then give me feedback on the overall experience, including sign up.

In any case, thanks for all the answers so far. This all helps make it easier to understand how the jr system works.

Trial and error is a good way to learn, of course, but is time consuming. Having guidance in advance is useful, and the present question and answer (Q&A) forums are steadily adding such guidance.

I keep 10 email addresses for testing
1@mydomain.com
2@mydomain.com
3@mydomain.com
4@mydomain.com
....

But maybe you don't want to do that. Could try something like this:
https://www.guerrillamail.com

Which seams to be a service for disposable email addresses. Or search for "disposable email address" or similar to find others.
