forum questions/suggestions

I know you're doing a TON of stuff, and I haven't had time to read through everything so I may very well have missed it. I have two questions about the forums - if they're not possible currently, consider them suggestions ;)

1) are subforums possible? I haven't seen them used on here (unless I'm a complete idiot, which is entirely possible!) Just thought it would help better organize discussions
2) is pagination on threads possible? On most threads it's not an issue, but that installation thread is becoming monstrous!

Thanks,

Kyle

Hey Kyle - thanks for the feedback!

1) No - sub forums are not planned - it makes things more complicated than they need to be. Obviously this may be an area where a 3rd party developer could do something if the community wanted it. I personally don't like sub forums.

2). Yeah it's possible - just not something that has been added yet. I don't really like to optimize for the corner case (i.e. a really large thread) at the expense of the norm, so I'll have to see how it works out like it is.

Thanks!

Ahh thanks man!

I had a few other thoughts:

3) I use the next/prev forum topic links a lot on the current jamroom.net forums. I go through every post, so being able to do that for posts I didn't respond to made life a little easier.

4) I couldn't find an easy way to get back to a certain page in the forum when I was reading a thread deeper than page 1 (i.e. read a thread on page 4, but if I respond or click the forum link at the top to go back to the list, I get bumped back to page 1). Normally the back button works fine (I'd personally prefer a link, but that's me), but where it was slightly bothersome was when I had responded to a post - then I didn't want to have to use back multiple times in order to get back to the correct page (or go back to page 1 through the forum link and then page my way back)

Those are mainly just personal things that would streamline the forum use for me (as someone who practically used to live on them ;)

Also, did you prune any posts? there were 5 pages of posts when I logged on today, but there are only 4 now.

Thanks!

Yeah I pruned out a bunch of old tests posts.

I just rolled out a small update that now shows you the index page number you are on in the Breadcrumb section - so if you go view a topic you'll see you can now click on "Page 3" (for example) to jump back to page 3 and not back to the front page.

Let me know if that helps out.

Thanks!

Sub forums should be working better now - I did a huge round of bug fixes and tweaks this morning, so let me know if you see any issues.

Thanks!

The "mark all topics as read" button no longer works (at least on this forum).

Hmmm I did it earlier and it worked for me. Are you still seeing the individual posts highlighted, or are you seeing the forum category highlighted?

Thanks!

It's only the forum category which is highlighted.

I did revisit every post in the other categories (as there are not many posts) and tried using the "mark as read" button on each page of the 7 pages, but the category remains highlighted.

Let me see if I can see that here and see if it still highlights the category after I've read these new posts.

Okay I see it to. I have to vent a little here that there is like 2,000 corner cases for handling read vs. unread posts - seriously it so much more complicated than it would ever seem on the surface to try and handle all the situations. I had this working 100% a few hours back, and now that it is on test.jamroom.net it's not working. argh.

I see some view entries in the view table without a category - I bet that is related, so let me get that fixed.

Okay I reset a few items in the view table that were missing categories, and found a cache view that was not updating the view time, so let me know if that works any better.

Thanks!

I still see one issue and know why it is happening and will get a fix in for it (basically once all topics in a forum are viewed, you have to exit to the main category index and come back into the forum again before they are all marked as read).

I'm seeing the topic Admin Hover Menu, in the Using Jamroom forum, showing as a new post all the time... its the only one though.

There were some more entries in the view table that weren't correct and I removed them - let me know if that fixes it.

I've got some debug in there now too to try to figure out how they are getting added so I can get it fixed.

Thanks!

Hmm, it is still showing a new post for that topic.

I've cleared my browser cache, even shut it down and restarted, and also tried logging out and back in.

So the "Admin Hover menu" post is still showing unread? Everything has worked perfect for me since my last update a few days back, so I have no idea why it would not be working for you.

Yes, the "Admin Hover menu" topic is still showing as unread and it is the only topic that is showing as unread.

Okay - should be fixed. It was in with the wrong profile_id, so looks like that is still happening on an occasional basis, so I'll try to see if I can spot where that is happening.

Not sure if you're working on it at the moment or not, but I just had a bunch of "unread" posts all the sudden get marked as read - not sure how. I was on page 2 of the "using jamroom" forum reading a topic and I clicked on the "page 2" breadcrumb - all the topics on the page were showing as read (previously having been "unread"). I refreshed the page, and the topics then showed correctly for being unread. I went into another thread to read it, hit the page 2 breadcrumb again, and the topics were back to being all marked as read. When I hit refresh this time, though, instead of reverting back to unread, they just stayed as read :/

Any ideas?

One other question - on phpbb2, if you logged in, posts that were unread since your last login showed as unread. If you logged out and logged in again, those posts no longer showed as unread. Does this forum work that way? or will should any unread posts remain unread until they've actually been read? (haven't bothered to try - just asking)

Thanks!

unfortunately no - I may end up having to completely scrap the read/unread as it seems that every day new corner cases are uncovered - I'm not sure if it will ever work properly due to the number of different routes that can be taken into and out of topics (categories, indexes, breadcrumbs, direct, etc.) - it's already a fairly complicated mix of DB storage and session variables, and at this point I'm going to say it is "good enough" for now. Sorry!

No - this forum does not work that way - it will remember between log outs.

Hope this helps!

Scrap it for now. Provide an unmarked latest topics view.

It would be an incomplete new feature, not a loss.

Guys I have struggled with the forum for awhile. Coming from PHPBB and VBulletin, I was not sure about using the JR Forum. It may not have all the bells and whistles but after thinking about it for a bit, I would take the JR5 Forum any day of the week. I love having it integrated across the site and a single sign on. That alone is worth everything.

The forum is functional now and my hats off to everyone. All the bells and whistles will get built a long the way. Then just when we have it perfect, Brian will launch JR10 and we will start all over. :)

The next phase for me is moving 100k vb forum posts into it. Brian - lets stress test it muhahaha.

No worries then - could have just been a hiccup anyways.

I know we've gone over this a few times, but think that the read/unread issue I've had a few times has to do those breadcrumbs and moving between pages via them. I can deal with it - just trying to add info!

I haven't seen any read/unread issues in some time - the only little issue I occasionally see is that at the main index level it will occasionally show a category highlighted even though I have read everything inside - I refresh my browser and it clears.
