completed Ability to sort Smileys manually

This is not a big deal to anyone who only has like two or three dozen smileys used on their site.
But my members absolutely LOVE using smileys/emoticon/gifs in their posts and comments all over my site. Cometchat gives them several hundred smileys as well, organized in categories that are easy to browse, like: Nature, Faces/people, Objects. Similar setup in many sites, email and other programs, I think.
Ok don't laugh- my JR site has almost 200 smileys to choose from...and my members love that.
However, ever since i upload my first 30 or so, I've felt a need for being able to 'sort' them into general categories. Right now with almost 200, their order looks random and makes it real hard to look through them for something you want. In the Smiley module, they are sorted by the order I've added them over time, and I cannot change them since they each have an id # and they stay sorted by that.

What makes this situation worse now is that the new JR Chat feature (yaaaay!!) sorts/displays the site smileys alphabetically by descriptive name I've given ("angel", "Beer", "Brrr"...)... and this is yet a totally different order than how the same site smileys appear when creating a forum post. Please see my attached screenshot for how hard this becomes to browse. (and don't laugh)
Yeah, I know...I could remove half my smileys...but then my members would be p'd off and it'd STILL be hard to look through them.

My wish- I'd love to have my Smileys sorted into my own preferred order when members go to select one to use (like maybe: happy/love/hugs... angry/sad/shocked... food/music/hobbies... animals/nature...objects/funny).

It'd also be great if the jrChat displayed smileys in the SAME order as the Smiley Module displays them when you post elsewhere on the site in forums, comments etc.
Thanks for listening!

Update- I applied the new sorting/categories in jrSmiley & jrChat- thanks for developing this- it REALLY helps when you have lots of smileys!!

The categories are each displaying perfectly when in use in the text editor on the site/posting etc. The smiley categories display fine in jrChat as well, BUT- for some reason when going to choose a CHAT smiley while in chat, 'some' of the categories were duplicated and contain the exact identical set of smileys as their 'twin' category. Other categories remain un-duplicated (which is how they should be), and I can't figure out what if anything i did to make that duplicate happen- didn't think I was doing anything unusual when creating or loading the categories.
This is on my whistle site (non-live, which is the site I have jrChat installed on...both my sites have same admin login info)

The things is, I figured I'd try deleting one or both of one set of twin categ's, so I emptied all the smileys from that pair of cat's into the Default cat., planning to then delete both instances of the category and create it again fresh...but I can't find how to DELETE a category once it's been created either- even when it's emptied out...?

p.s. did integ check cache etc. but that didn't do anything.

Try clearing your browser cache and see if that fixes it.

Hi Douglas-
Nope, did not fix it. It shows up the same way on both Chrome and Firefox.

Categories do not live "separate" from a smiley image. Once there are no more images in a category, the category is effectively deleted. So it sounds like you still have a smiley in the category if you are still seeing it.

Let me know if that helps.

Ok thanks Brian!- I'll try again removing all smileys from one category that was 'twinned', then creating it anew once it's (hopefully) gone. Will post back here after trying that (though I did try that once, but perhaps I missed one.

Yeah that should work - if you still see the category, and are sure you've remove ALL images from that category, let me know so I can look in your DB and see what is up.

Thanks!

I think I see how this is occurring-
When I make a category and call it for example: food/party
The smiley module changes that to: food-party and shows BOTH and of course both versions of the category have identical smileys in them..

It did the same when I named a category: misc.
-it created a twin category named: misc (without the period) and shows both.

I'm not sure what you mean by "and shows BOTH and of course both versions of the category" - do you mean when you change the category that somehow the original category is still showing?

When I create a category simply named: other ....it doesn't change my cat. name and do the twin thing, and there's no problem.
YES, just now when I removed all smileys from a category, the category deisappeared as you said it should. So I can rid myself now of the twinned cat.'s . But, you might still want to look into tweaking something to avoid creating a twin if the chosen cat. name doesn't meet the approved criteria. Otherwise it's going to happen often for people using it.

Brian I cannot 'change' the category, aside from adding/deleting smileys from it. It's JR that is changing the cat name to the hyphened version (understandably)- but the menu options when choosing a smiley in an actual chat post show both my name cat and the same cat but with the JR hyphenated name. Should maybe show only the JR hyphen version of categ. to choose. see above screenshot.

Happens only when i name a categ. with say two words, or use a / or a period in my cat name. A simple one word category name like "smiles" does not get changed or twinned by jrChat.

So what you're saying is if you enter a category like:

cats/dogs

It is creating TWO categories?

Yes- the smiley module is doing that- see this screenshot...

Oh, I see it originates in the smiley Module, not the chat module-
see this smiley module screenshot:

It did it to my categ name: misc.
It didn't like the period, so I wound up with TWO categories: misc. and misc
Likewise, it's keeping my original cat name of food/party and adding another twin categ called food-party

I bet it'll do the same if I name a new category: Silly!

I am stuck with the twin categories because when I go to move a smiley, it only gives me the option of the sad/mad categ, the dropdown options don't include the sad-mad (hyphened) categ. that jr created.

I'm testing this and don't see this here. I changed the category for an existing smiley to "food/party" and I don't see a "food-party" category - only "food/party".

Nevermind - I think I see what is going on here based on your last screenshot. Note that for now you can just enter "sad-mad" in the NEW category field. I will try to find out why it is not showing in the drop down.

Ok, weird...it seems that the major problem here is that any modifications I make to new or emptying categ's take several MINUTES to appear and be valid...even with clearing cache and refresh browser. I just finally got rid of my sad/mad twin. Once the food/party FINALLY disappears (by moving the smileys in it to the default categ temporarily), THEN the option to move it to food-party suddenly is there. So if there are twins, then the moving of smileys to the right twin and getting rid of the wrong twin is a two-step process, since the right categ wont appear in the menu to move it to...until the wrong twin is cleared out already and disappers. Oy, this is hard to explain!
The twinning shuoldnt be happening and is the cause of all these acrobatics afterwards.

It does show up- but only AFTER I succesfully empty the food/party categ by transferring those to some other categ temporarily, like default categ.
Once the food/party is truly emptied and dissappears, then the food-party appears in the options to move smilies to.

Something important to know here. These 2 categories:

food-party
food/party

Are going to result in the SAME URL, since a forward slash is not allowed in a URL name. So I would recommend using something else - i.e.

food, party
food - party
food & party

etc.

OK update to version 1.2.1, and that should now show all the categories in the Smiley Browser drop down selector, and also fixes a caching issue.

Note again that you WILL see doubled categories in your chat selector IF 2 different categories end up with the SAME category URL - i.e. foot/party and food-party would end with 2 sections in the chat selector. So make sure all smilies in a category are using the SAME one (i.e. all use food/party or all use food-party).

Let me know if that helps.

Ok, with the update everything seems to be working a bit better and faster. I have better control now to make the needed sorting/changes/categories.
Thanks very much! This broad sorting feature improvement is great for both jrSmiley and jrChat! Marking this solved, and
Thumbs up!!! :D
