Groups: how to receive notification of new member applying for a private group

I have a private group that is attached to a profile that is linked to several accounts of members. when anyone tries to join that group, I (as the master admin, I guess) get an email with that request but the members that are linked to the profile for that group don't get an email.

So how do I set it up so that the members linked to that profile get the email that there is a new group applicant? and yes, their notifications are set up to receive an email with "new group applicant"

The Group module only sends the 'new applicant' email to the actual owner of the group.

Ahhh... that explains it I think. So I will actually need to change the owner of the group to one person, who will then receive the emails...

Thanks, Paul. You're helpful, as always.

Ok, but I need to say that we don't like that! I created a special profile that I linked to two different people. it has a "neutral" name because we didn't want the group to show up as belonging to one person.

So in our case, we set up a "Fellows" profile that is linked to two member accounts (Mary & Lynn) so that Mary and Lynn can both have some sort of admin rights to the profile. Then we created a group called "Fellows group" that is "owned" by the profile called "Fellows".

So "ownership" of the group looks like it belongs to the Fellows profile, but that doesn't matter?

Any other ideas for a work-around on this one?

It may be easiest to just update the Group module so as to send notifications to all linked users, but want to think about it for a bit to make sure there are no implications with this.

That would be a wonderful thing.... And since individual people can set their notifications so that they don't get the notifications, we could allow some of the linked users to opt out.

An alternative would be a simple custom module to 'listen' for this 'new applicant' notification and then search for any linked users and copy it to them as well.
I'm worried that this is an exception to the way Jamroom normally works so specifically adding it to a core module like Group could open up a can of worms!!

I'm not sure what the hesitancy is about this. If users are linked to a profile, I would think it's a good thing for them to automatically get a message when someone interacts with that profile. Why would that be a bad thing?

Is there any other way that I'm missing for multiple people to be admins for a group ? That's what started this whole discussion on our end.

Deb, the reason for a notification of new member application is logically so that the person receiving the notification can then approve the new member (or not). Just wondering- do you need all the people who receive such notifications in the group to be able to approve the new applicant? If not, then why would they need to receive such notifications...especially in a private group?
Is there a reason you need to have multiple people be able to approve new applicants to a private group? Forgive me- just thinking out loud here because i'm thinking there surely must be a simple approach or solution to it.

I appreciate you joining this conversation, Strumelia. The group wants to have a couple of admins available to approve folks since none of them wants that responsibility alone. But you're right that it's a private group and, as such, have a limited number of folks who want to join. So they really are pretty easy to track.

But we also have a public group (open to unlimited folks) that wants to have multiple admins so one person doesn't have all the responsibility for noticing who's joining, welcoming them to the group, encouraging discussions, etc. So I am definitely interested in the easiest possible answer to this...

I took a look at the notifications and there is a thing called "Group Watch" - what does that do?

I believe "Group Watch" is what a group member can click to activate it so that they get a notification every time there is a NEW DISCUSSION started in that Group. This is slightly different from 'following' a particular discussion and thus getting notified upon a new POST in that discussion.

"...multiple admins so one person doesn't have all the responsibility for noticing who's joining, welcoming them to the group, encouraging discussions.."
-but one doesn't need to be any kind of Admin to easily be able to do any of those things.
I have about 6 members on my site who are volunteer "Greeters". As a kind of loosely knit team, they like to check in on new site members a couple times a week and they leave welcome comments on the new members' Profile page Comment Wall. Enough of them are around and doing this at any given time so that any new site member gets an average of three or so welcome comments within a day of joining my site. I think they must jot down the name of the last person they greeted, and they keep track of who is next when they go look in on the latest members page. Perhaps you could ask several members to volunteer being Greeters for a particular Group.
Such enthusiastic volunteers needn't be admins or even moderators... yet it's nice to acknowledge/reward their contributions in some way. My way is to devote a small widget on my site's main page thanking our "Welcome Wagon" members: https://fotmd.com/
Another way might be to place a modest label on their profile page or member avatar designating their 'status' as a greeter or site assistant. Just a couple of thoughts.

This has been added to the next release of the Group module. It should be in the Marketplace within the next few days.
