I am a bit confused about this as there are three different modules that have similar functionality. Could someone post examples of each? I haven't attempted to migrate yet, though at some point I'll set up a test site to figure it out. In my ning site we have a Forum with several categories which works for us.

Yes, there are three options when importing a Ning2 site forum -

Forum - Import to the main Jamroom forum module. What you are looking at now is this module so what you see here is what you'll end up with.

Group - Some users who have migrated there Ning sites to Jamroom liked the idea of a Group pages being the main forum, so this option was created. Basically a 'Forum Profile' is created or assigned and on import, forum categories force groups of the same name to be created, then for Topics under each category, Group Discussions are created, and the topic comments and then added to each discussion.

Discussion - This is an alternative Forum module that was sponsored by ex-Ningster @perrie. She wanted 'threaded comments' on her forums which this forum module doesn't support so the 'Discussion' module was developed to support this. Actually, I don't think this module has ever been put into the Jamroom Marketplace. If you are interested in it, I can do that.

Hope that makes sense. Out of the three I'd recommend the Forum module as that is the most featured of the three options.

It seems like the Discussion is closest to the Ning forums as those are threaded. can someone link to an example?

out of curiosity why doesn't the Forum module allow for threaded comments?

I'll get the Discussion module into the marketplace so that when you try JR out you'll be able to install it.

To be honest, we never had any demand for threaded comments until we opened the Jamroom door to Ningsters. At that point we responded and added the feature to our Comments module, but the way the Forum module works made it too difficult for us to implement it there.

Note that in the archive Ning fail to include comment threading associations so imported comments are 'serial', but subsequent Jamroom comments on the same string can be threaded if need be.

I think threads are necessary to have a vibrant discussion that is allowed to spiral in different direction. good to know that the current threads will be lost. I'll try to get my users to adjust there expectations.

Personally, I don't like threaded discussions for exactly that reason. To much jumping around trying to keep on top of things. That's why we advocate 'one issue, one thread' here on the Jamroom forums and tickets so that we can track things easier.
But hey, other users do like them so we give you the choice :-)

Checkout the @perrie forums at http://thenewstalkers.com/community/discussion for an example of the Discussion module (using threaded forums).
