user tip Can group owners add a document to one of their group's pages? If so, how?

One of my groups has a number of pages that were added when we were on Ning. When we migrated, we managed to get most the pages attached to the right groups. Those pages included documents that were embedded in them... We haven't tested all of those yet, but the ones we spot-checked seem to be working. People are able to access those documents.

So how do group owners add a document to one of their group's pages? Is it possible to do that? We could only find a way to embed an image or a video, but not a document.

I don't see an 'embed document' plugin option currently in the Tinymce text editor by default. You might be able to add one on your own.
A workaround might be to use the Jamroom "Attach" function to attach the document to a subsequent post in a group page...?

Hmm.... I don't see "Attach" in the comment area on the group page. The other issue with this is that this group on our site has a lot of technical documents that they provide their group members and they have added them as they became available. They want to be able to organize and re-arrange their docs as they move forward... just trying to think of creative ways to use JR to let them do that. I'm going to have to think on this one a while...

Take a look at the File module. This allows users to upload any file. It can then be embedded in comments etc.

Or maybe turn the attachments option on in your forum.

So Paul - I have the file module activated. I've uploaded a file to my profile. Now how do I embed that in a page that I'm creating? I need the simple detailed directions, please...

How are you creating the page?
If you are using the Page module the file can be embedded in the HTML editor - click on the 'media' icon (right on second row of toolbar).

It sounds like what would suit you best is a 'File' version of the "Editor Image Upload" module. It currently doesn't exist.

From your description it sounds like the work flow you are after is:
* add a page to your group
* edit the content of that page
* include a document in that page

Which would work perfectly for the (not yet existant) "Editor File Upload" module.

Since it doesnt exist yet, the work flow that does exist is using the FILE tab of the "Editor Embed Media" module along with the FILE module to embed files in the page that DO exist on the profile.

The workflow to that is:
* upload any files you plan on including to the FILE area of your profile.
* add a page to your group
* edit the content of that page
* include the FILE in that page

--edit--
The difference in the two workflows is that currently the file needs to be uploaded before it tries to be included.

Does the File Module include a setting that can limit the size of files added by each quota? ...I wouldn't want members to be able to upload gigantic docs.

It doesn't but we can look at adding it in -

Isn't this what the "Group Pages" module was made for?

Brian, I may be wrong, but I think what she means is this-
There does not seem to be a way to embed a .doc, .txt, etc type file into a Group Page.

Using the tinymce embed buttons, one can only embed videos, images, other other media. Tinymce apparently won't accept docs for embedding. As for the Jamroom "attach" function, that is available for subsequent REPLIES to the Group Page post, but it's not available in the initial post...either when first creating the Page, or when editing it afterwards.
So, if one wants to offer a Group Page with documents in it, the only way is to embed the docs into subsequent 'reply' posts to the page...and thus they become mixed in with other members' replies to the main post, like an afterthought.

ICW, please correct me if that's not what you are talking about.

I don't think that "embedding" documents is something we would support - there's just too many variables at play to try to create some sort of "viewer" and maintain security.

Here's what I suggest:

- if it is a TEXT document (i.e. .doc, etc) just cut and paste the CONTENT as a Group Page.
- if is something else, attach the file on the first COMMENT on the Group Page.

Let me know if that helps.

Ah, very good!
And...I'm guessing the reason I don't see a "File" tab in my embed media page is because A) I don't have the FileDownloads module installed and B) consequently do not have any files uploaded to my profile yet.
This is all very handy to know- thank you!

I went off to work at a big conference this week (very busy time) so I didn't have time to check back here. Now I'm back and it seems you all have solved this for me! Strumelia, you totally rock since you understood so well what I was trying to do and helped me figure out what was missing here. It was a brilliant observation that I couldn't see the file tab because I hadn't uploaded any files yet. Thanks to Michael also for the documentation... this will help our group members tremendously.

Completely forgot that this can be done with the embedded media module - thanks Michael!
