in a 48 without sleep marathon of tweaking my front page, i moved it up 20 positions for 1 of my single word "short tail' keywords, and reduced load time to 1/2
this is how i did it, 1st, got a general idea of my keyword density here

note, keyword density is not everything there is to seo, but getting it in a good range can make a big big diference
dreadlocks and dreads were between 0.87 and 0.98 ish.. at a guess cant remember exactly where they started at
i then edited my 3 text widgets to bring these up to 1.34-1.69 ...ish
went through deleted a few excess words, made contractions of a few like cannot became can't to reduce the irrelevant words slightly
this only made a tiny difference
heres where the big differences came in, in both speed and word density
nuke all irrelevent content that can be found through other means... lazer focus your front page to the sites prime themes
for me, this involved nuking the video music, groups, events, group discussions, and members profiles widgets
this reduced server requests to 1/2 and site speed was dramaticly affected, whats more, the main 2 keywords were now right in the 2.3-2.6% range, optimal for most sites would be 2-4% but would require trial and error testing andadjusting leaving weeks to alow searchengines to adjust to changes to determine the sweet spot for your site
next, i reduced the text in forums truncation from 700 char to 300, again reducing the number of irrelevant words but retaining a naturallness
site speed doubled (also reduced the background image from 230k to 30k) overall word count was reduced to 1/2 about.. again more an 'optimal' range
in 24 hours of testing 1 keyword jumped 20 positions, and is still slowly climbing (1-2 positions every 6 hours) the other 1 is still fluctuating alot but it can take a week or 2 to stabalize
overall these few changes seem to have made a dramatic effect ..but continual "tweaking" will be needed for a couple months
this isnt meant as a "do this and you will dominate google' tip, just suggestions on a way to tune up your front page for possible higher search trafic and faster speeds
keep in mind, getting those 2 "short tail' keywords on top 10 positions would increase trafic by 10 times what you get from thousands of long tail keywords combined
