What about support for SVG files? I know that Chrome, Safari, and Firefox support them. They look pretty darn good and would take good advantage of the pixel height parameter.

Thanks for the links!

At the sizes the smilies are usually presented at (i.e. usually under 32 pixels in height or so) I'm not sure SVG has any advantages other then a slightly smaller size.

Is this something you think is really needed?

.svg for smileys is not a priority at all. But, having seen .svg here and not on the list of supported file types it got me to wondering.

I have not begun to add custom smilies yet, but all I can say is my members have a great variety on my ning site, many of them animated...and they use them like crazy and LOVE them. I'm going to HAVE TO produce a nice array of smilies for them or I'll have a mutiny on my hands. We are a very social network of mostly amateur musicians...lots of friendly fun and interaction.
So anything that will make my job easier when adding fun smilies is very welcome.
