Ok, this is quick but I want to be sure...
I now have two Ning Archives in separate folders on my server- the fiorst one from two months ago that has been imported into my JR site already.
The newer one is only one month old (fresher) and I am about to use it to import over my older ning content to see how that goes.
(I have safety copies of both on my computer by the way)

My server provider Arvixe is not happy with the space I'm currently using on my (cheap for now) shared server, so I want to delete the older archive. Then I'll import the newer content and leave the newer archive only on the server.
On my server, I have already moved the older archive to a folder called "Older", and the new (not yet imported) ning archive is unzipped and sitting in a folder called Ning_Archive....ready for import later this week.

Is it ok to now delete the older ning archive? In other words --> Does my JR site still need to currently reference the older ning archive stuff in any way? Deleting it is not going to mess up anything that's already been imported and working fine on my jr site, right? I just don't want some weird meltdown to occur because I was clueless.
Thanks!

Hi Strumelia - No such thing as a dumb question ;-)

If you have also run the 'Manage Media' tool on your original import, and have the resulting folder with all referenced files copied from the original archive, then yes, its ok to delete the original archive. You can then import the newer archive over the original import.

What I would recommend though, assuming that your newer archive is complete and that your site is not live and has had no new signups or uploads (that you want to keep), is to run the import using the 'delete and re-import' mode on all items. The latest Import module has several fixes and changes from when I originally imported for you meaning that if you do it this way you can take advantage of the recent changes and efficiencies etc.
I can help with this re-import if you want?

Paul, if you are offering to do the re-import for me, I would be THRILLED.
If this import goes well, the next time I do a ning archive import would be right before I go live...once I get my site set up the way I need it.

However, I have to delete the "Older" Ning Archive by this afternoon, or else face the Wrath of Arvixe...yesterday they said they might SUSPEND my account within 48 hours if I didn't drastically reduce the amount of stuff I was storing on there. =8-o And I think they already put some sort of restriction on it, since my friend Troy could not download a copy of my older ning archive for safekeeping last night- the server Overlord cut him off at the knees. I guess I'm an outlaw already.

So yeah I gotta delete that older ning archive folder TODAY, before this evening. It's clearly marked in a folder named "Older", and the newer fresher archive is all set up ready to import in the folder named simply "Ning_Archive".

There is a separate folder called "data" on my server, with many folders inside it, like "media"...which all somehow got created during my first import, so I'm guessing that's the needed folder of copied stuff you are referring to, which I will NOT delete.

If you are willing.... I will send you my server info and you first could check to make sure I have that needed Data Folder and its contents are in there ok, then delete the Older Ning Archive, and then run the newer import and let me know as soon as it's finished and looking correct? It actually takes me DAYS to run the import - maybe it'll go faster if you are doing it.

but the main thing is I have to delete that older archive before I get thrown into the flames of Arvixe Pergatory... l o l

I will now email you my server access info... Lisa

P.S. "assuming that your newer archive is complete and that your site is not live and has had no new signups or uploads (that you want to keep), is to run the import using the 'delete and re-import' mode on all items. The latest Import module has several fixes and changes from when I originally imported for you meaning that if you do it this way you can take advantage of the recent changes and efficiencies etc."

Yes all this is true and yes that'd be great to do the 'delete and re-import' though I understand it will take longer. Are my 4 moderators (who now have site access) and I supposed to stay logged off the site altogether while the import is going on, or doesn't that matter?

Have got your email and will take a look.
Its funny how these web hosts that offer "Unlimited Disk Space" get upset when someone actually takes advantage of that lol but I guess they have something in the small print about 'reasonable usage'!!

I know! It's like, ok I know it's a cheap shared server space for now...but heck, I could fit it all on an iPad mini fer cripes' sake! ;D
Thanks Paul- you're awesome.

Got your email, am informing my mods to stay off the site til the import is done...and me too. :)
