solved Member Credential Migration

Before I do a final update of my Ning Archive export I want to let my members know what to do before I put the site into maintenance mode for the migration.

What is the process for migrating passwords? If they are not carried over then I want to send an email to members telling them what to expect.

Will they receive an email automatically when the import is complete? Do I need to manually send one?

What's the process step-by-step?

TIA,

Hi Clay
Ning member passwords are (rightly) not available in their archives. On import, new randomly generated Jamroom passwords are created.
There is a tool in the Ning Import module to send this new password to all imported users, with instructions on how to log in and optionally change their passwords. Emails are only sent to users who have not already logged into the new Jamroom site so you can periodically repeat the process as a reminder to your users.

Paul -

Thanks for the heads up. I will mention this to members in the email I send to them before doing the migration.

I am assuming that the Ning passwords are nicely salted and hashed (and not with corned beef) before safely being stored away in the db. But you never know ... they've done some pretty silly things in the past. And the present, for that matter.

Ning passwords are not available in the archive.
Jamroom stored passwords are 'nicely salted and hashed' on the database with no way of anyone (not even admin) knowing what they originally were.
