setting additional admins confusion

im going to attempt to explain my confusing situation clearly so i dont confuse you as much as im confused

i created the site with soaringeagle wich got assigned id 1

during import ☮ soaring eagle ॐ was assigned 85 and all my ning data imported there

thinking i needed to link them and selecting that profile would make it "active" and the profile id post as i linked them but that didnt give the desired result

so i re-linked ☮ soaring eagle ॐ to ☮ soaring eagle ॐ and went into users and saw in soaringeagle 2 additional profiles with checkmarks 1 the forums profile im importing into and 1 ☮ soaring eagle ॐ
and an option to change soaringeagle the user from master admin profile admin or standard user

but no other user accounts including ☮ soaring eagle ॐ have any option to make them an admin user

so im confused as to how exactly do i set other users as profile or master admins
i really want to login as ☮ soaring eagle ॐ to post as that name but still have admin access

and im going to be having some experts help me with a few things next weekend and want to set a master admin account for them (someone i trust and have worked with for years)

ok i figured it out by trial and error so we can move this to tips as the documentation was no help neither was searching

to create additional admin accounts
step 1 go to user accounts -tools-create new user
step 2 create a user assign it master admin if they have a profile uncheck the create profile if they dont leave it checked
step 3 if they had a profile link the new admin user to the existing profile

that was not intuitive at all nor was there any info anywhere i could find that explained it
luckily im the type to keep poking around till i figure it iut

i do still have a question though now i have ☮ soaring eagle ॐ soaringeagle and soaringeagle 1 showing up under my picture

is the data imported associated with thed user account or profile
the reason i ask is can i delete the ☮ soaring eagle ॐ accoount leaving the ☮ soaring eagle ॐ data delete the soaringeagle1 account create a soaring eagle master account link that to ☮ soaring eagle ॐ profile
and not lose the data

it just seems messy having the extra useless accounts

edit to add...why cant we simply promote existing accounts to admin..that would make so much more sence and he so much simpler...not to mention intuitive...thats just how youd expect it to work

again problem solved but no idea how or why
once logged in as the new account i was able to change ☮ soaring eagle ॐ to an admin account then delete the soaringeagle 1
i have no idea why it worked or why it didnt before

the whole process made no sence
but somehow it worked

Promoting an account to admin should be as easy as going to that account as an admin user. Click on their image to get to their PROFILE account settings page. then change to the ACCOUNT tab (to adjust the user).

under "master admin options" there is "User Group". Change that from STANDARD USER to MASTER ADMIN and it that user is an admin.

unless im creating a new user there is no option under modifying account to do that

there is no master admin options except on the account thats already a master admin...or 1 im newly creating
but none that im editing have the master admin section at all

i know it makes no sence and it should be there wich would be intuitive and easy but i went over and over and over trying to find it and could bnot find it except by creating a new account ..

its just not there

diagnosed
switched to elastic checked 3rd account in list saw it was there
swiched back to ningja checked 3rd accouynt in list..it was there..but not 2nd account in list

it seems some accounts the options just not there for them..no idea why

Could be something being missed when the import happens.

My first guess would be to go to one of the users who you cant do it on, figure out their user_id then look for the 'user_group' in the database.

I suspect that if that was missing that might cause what your describing. It shouldn't be missing, but it shouldn't be happening so got to start somewhere right.

You can see the ID of their user account in that ACCOUNT tab, in the url. it will be something like:

Then in your database (I like phpmyadmin to browse it. you can get there from your servers control panel.) you will locate a table 'jr_user_item_key'

The attached screenshot shows phpmyadmin showing the user_group for user_id=1. You'd locate whatever id the user is you want to know about. (sorry if thats confusing. Its WAY more in depth than you should ever need to go to just run jamroom.)

Ning Import has an option to specify the Ning Admin member name so that when the import finds it, the parameters and items are allocated to JR Admin (ID:1) instead and the Ning Admin member is not subsequently imported.
I think the fact that your Ning Admin name has special characters in it may have caused the matching to fail.

FWIW I am not having the missing option that SE is experiencing. I seem to see the quota selection option fine on mine and other random members account tab.

no in phpmyadmin i see user group user

user id 13328 is 1 of them im seeing this on
but also was 85

i manualy set 85 to master in the database now the options are there

actualy not seeing the option in most accounts

still doing a lil detective work

nope im stumped it does seem like something in the skin though i think

figured it out
the show tours checkbox disables it from showing!
i unchecked show tours on 1 and the master admins box popped right up

thats not expected behavior is it?

yea i didnt think so since it didnt do that in elastic

when i find a bug that confuses me i go to alotta trouble to diagnose it and figure out why its happening
thats why i love beta testing ...i dont just report bugsbut try to figure out what might be the cause

Is this 'show tours' being checked still an issue? I've just checked your site as admin and am not seeing what you describe above.

but now even unchecking thats not making it show but i did add a bunch of new feilds for profile questions

also try ff im not sure if its browser specific
