just set that up to import new data in
so heres a few questions i have aboout this

1 it said select quoata this profile should belong to i selected admin but was unsure if thats the best option

2 it required a full url but my sites on a test domain i assume (but want to make sure) that this only matters for the import process and changing it to the real domain for the final "toppimg off" import shouldnt matter?

3 will this profile that was imported into be auto added to the menu or will i need to manualy do this

4 (1 i just thought of) will pages be able to be assigned to this profile

I have an additional little question about this as well, if I may...

I created a new profile (with me as 'owner') and called it "Forums".
I re-imported all forum discussions from my ning archive pointing into it, and the forums seem to now be there ok.
But I have a navigation link along the top of my site for "Discussions" which still points to the old location. For the life of me I can't seem to find where exactly to change where that link points to....?
In the header_menu_desktop.tpl under Ningja skin, I have the following, but not seeing how I can change the URL the top menu link points people to?:
code.jpg
code.jpg  •  16KB

have u deleted thyge obsolete modules
have u cleared temmplate cAcxche

and it might be a simular case as what im dealingh with where u need to clear the database tables then re-import
that last paerts a guess but this is what id try

1 the system integrity check
2 ckloear temoplate cache
um 3 wait im betting i know what the issue is
i shoulda thought of this sooner

when u created the profile and named it forums discussions most likely linked to a page called forums before so your profile might have a url like forums1

click your name
then profiles
click the forum profile
copy the url from the address bar and compare it to whats in the "import into" field

i used a profile named dreadlocks natural dreads to import the forum into instead of forums though might change it to dreadlocks forums sincve only the forums are being imported there i was thinking more of the site data would be

try changing it to mountain dulcimer forums and reimport see if that dont solve it

im fairly certain that the issue is the link alreasdy pointed to a page called forums your profile cAnt have the same url so typicale a -1 or something is added to make it unique

Nope, none of that applies.

I now have my discussion forum freshly re-imported imported into my new profile which is named "Forums". So my forums can now be found at:
(my site name).com/forums/forum
However, as I said, when I click on my "Discussions" link on the nav bar across the top of my site, it still takes me to (mysite).com.strumelia/forum and of course that's no good.
I do NOT need to re-import or change where the forums are imported to- it'[s all been done and is fine.
I merely need to change where the navigation bar LINK POINTS TO (simple), but I can't find where to do that.

So, my question still stands.

and you have everything updated?

when you click skins global config then site index and you have yoursite.com/forums in there?
i still think its gotta be a conflict cause jrforums used the forums url anjd the discussion link used to point to yoursite.com/forums i think..pretty sure
let me test something brb

nope i changed mine to just forums cleared cache and it olinked to the right profile
you dont need to change the link it changes itself as long as you have everything updated and set up right

and there is the possibility like i said that the data in the database is conflicting with the new format and may need to be cleared and re-imported thats a last step though id double check everythings updated and that u have it set right in the skin cause everytime u change that url in the skin setting it should change the url in the discussion link

ofcourse clear cache after chasnging it

Ah, I found my answer. I needed to go to my:
skins> global configs> site index. There's a box to type in the forum's URL you want. (NOT the profile ID#, into which I imported the discussions archive)
Now it works right.

Looks like I found it at the same time you were typing.

oh strum just a tip
something im considering but not sure till i import
i think im going to create a special quota for that "main' profile
that will have only the forums active nothing else
i was going to have the landing page be the forums but i think i want it to be the index with latest activity and latest discussions

and have none of the other profile tabs only forums available

yes i am using the profile i created and named "forums" only for the forum. (note there is no conflict because I on purpose I named the profile forums (with an s), while the actual forum is without the s.

got ya that was just a theory as i remembered having to manualy edit an early version but now that i remember corectly it was cause the link was to /discuss but the page was /discussions or something like that this was like version 1.00 of ninja skin i think

there is a method to my madness its how i problem solve i think things through on the fly then test the theories till i got it right

i still think theres a better way to do the group list by activity then how paul suggested but i think it would require assigning variables and using a multi conditional approach thats way beyond my current skill level

when i learned programming it was like assembler cobol jcl um i forget the other 1 fortran i think? on mainframes and it gave me such a headache i was glad to break my back and not have to have a career in that

this is so much simpler and easier to understand but will take a lil while to figure it out (especialy since im trying to learn mostly by trial and error..lol)

further questions about this "main' profile
i asked if pages that were sitewide not group pages can be assigned to this profile
but ideally id also like to be able to add custom menu items or like the profile tabs
theres 1 discussion thats a forum discussion but its so complete and informative we use it as a menu item and is practicly required reading its the "goto' reference i guess it would equate to your "documentation' link and below that we have 3 or is it 4 other very important info pages

can these special pages and discussions somehow be added as menu items either in the main menu or profile menu when in this profiles space

like your documentation links and such these are highly important to be highly visable and accessible right from the menu

soaringeagle:...ideally id also like to be able to add custom menu items or like the profile tabs
The profile menu tab can be found in the file:
/skins/(YOUR SKIN)/profile_menu.tpl

There is a {foreach} loop that outputs all of the menu items. You can add some extra one's in after that if you like. Probably an easier way to do it though would be to create a Page for that profile that outlined all the important things, then use the profile tweaks module to set that as the default landing page with all the notes on it.

Under the update screen for those important posts there is an option "Pinned" that allows you to keep it pinned to the top of the forum threads. (here's a screenshot)

when adding things to the profile_menu.tpl that adds them to all profiles

i guess the option id want is something like create a "mainforum" quota that only lists forums and pages
then in the menu tpl enclose those extra items in a {if quota="mainforum" type statement (not sure of exact syntax) . would that do the trick and only add those items to the menu if the profile quota matched the if condition
