ning skin and photos etc

switched to the ning skin ..i was having a nightmare of a timed trying to adaapt the elastic skin this is soooo much better but

couple coments questions and observations

1st off
the photos on the front page are not clickable u gotta click all then try to find the 1 u wahnt in a gallery

one in a gallery and u open a pic the > and
i know i found a bug in that so i assume thats been removed while being fixed

i had a question but let me try to figure it out myself b4 i ask it however it would be great if future skin versions had a selection option for pl afraid of code

aqnd that is simply to switch the left/right colums

hmm although...if i do that will that screw up the mobile view

discuss link doesnt work it needs to link to discussions not discuss
is there a way to have discussions show a excerpt instead of just a title
and a category view like category list with x numbermost recent active in each category sdeen

hmm odly enough the excerpt did show up lilol just the titles showed 1st ...developer mode delay ...
but still catetgory view and the proper link in the template

oh suggestion
im finding it hard to target selectors as alotta thing that i think should have classes dont and alotta things share classes that shouldnt or well can but its not logical like the blog_item blog title etc on the front page is on everrything blog or not

heres 2 examples of what i mean about having issues targetting the selectors or lack of selectors

with a border radius in the "item" i think it is that contains the photos they were poking out the corner in order to add a lil padsding below that i had to use the "clear" class and wnho know what that messed up elsewhere
anndthen the numbers at the bottom below the blogs is in a form with no class or id if i set it to white i had only body form or um i think table or block to choose from all of wich made something in admin or in user facing forms unreadable..white on white so had to choose a hideous color that showed up both on my backgrounjd and the white admin pages etc


i might end up trying to change all the admin anfd forms etc to a diferent color or transparent so i can make the full body text white

but in severalk places theres just a class structure thats making it dififcult to target especialy since so many things are used so broadly like item and blog-item-detail or whatever

brian i assume douglass created the ning skin
i wanna tell you how much work i had to do just to get that lil page counter below the blogs on the front page visible
the only way to make that visible and alow ppl to read forms and perform admin duties i had to sift through and sort out this code


this i even had to make the template editor background transparent wich made that hard to read (but was better then most of it being white on white) becausethat uses multi colored text

all that could have been acoided with a simple class or id attached to that page picker form

my biggest frustration right now isnt with the whole system as i have been styling nit messing with quotas and all the back end
my biggest issue is everythings an item within a block content

theres no for instance block content discussions
and discussion items
theres not enough granular control and when you do try changing something it affects things too globaly
i mean i had to go through and make every form and admin page transparent just to change the color of the page numbering

its a small thing i mean class names can be added at anytime and i know theres more pressing matters
just want ya to be aware that some of the nintgstersthat might come hereare creative coders that would want very specific control over everything

there aere just too many elements and kayer upon layer of elements with no real wayto target them specifically without having unwanted global affects that theyn require reworking whole sections to compensate

you can say an items an items an item but 1 item might be an orange another an apple and another a space shuttle .. they can be drasticly diferent and youd want to handle them diferently

imean imagine if u ran a store that sold everything from a toothpick to a rolls royce and you had 1 button on the cash register labled "item" youd be forced to set 1 price for everything you sell

and thats where i'm kinda stuck having to set the same style for every item

i know the ning things all new so it hasnt really been built out yet
just want to make sure your aware theres a need for greater styling control

give each item a specific type of item
as well as its container

i imagine ya were cut and pasting it together oike madmen in a hurry
i understand
but ya got photos discussiins activity members lists all in blog items

and can i suggest a forum section here or a doc somewhere fir a change log so when classes are added changed or rearranged its eassy to rewrite the css to take advantage of the new names

douglass see my othedr notes just posted and in 1 otherr discussion on the classes ertc and an idea for including a couple dedicated ad spaces

You can't switch the left and right columns, that would mess with the mobile view and is not supported in the skin, however... in the skin settings, you can hide the blocks you don't want or need, change how many show and in some blocks you can control what entries show by adding the ID of the item.

ok i can live with that

i hope you took my class notes as constructive and not a complaint i know in ways its a rough draft needing revisions and function comes before finesse

just im a creative type that wants to dive into perfecting the style before messing with the backend functions so that was holding me back from perfecting the look but i really should be working on the quatas and the function more anyway
its just thats what confuses me and the css styling thats where im in my confort zone

This can be very tricky - if we expose a unique class for every single element in the system, we end up with like 100,000 different classes. So instead we've tried to use some "base" classes (block, item, etc.) in most places, as that will give the most "uniform" layout and let users modify their site easily.

I know it's not perfect, but we've erred on the side of making it easy versus very specific classes. What you can do though if you need that level of precision is to add them in yourself (although I think you are already doing that).

well yea i know it can be way overdone but i mean simple things like a class for say discussion_list
then you can target .discussiion_list .item
i think ive only added 1 or 2
its finding the right ones to add emn to thats tricky
and u can have simple and flexible by having multiple like
item bloglistitem
