This topic may have been discussed more than a few times on Jamroom but I see it fit to mention here since migrated Ning users may think that this is an issue specific to migrated networks.
A new user signing up may report not receiving a verification email upon completing signup. Apparently this is a common issue. Thankfully, possible solutions to this issue is well documented here: http://archive.jamroom.net/FAQ_Server_Email_Issues
For me, the problem was solved by switching the "Active Email System" from "Log Sent Email to Debug Log" to "Local Server SMTP (default)" in the Email Support section of Global Configuration. yourdomain.com/mailer/admin/global.
