RE: Migration from Ning 3.0

I currently have a Ning 3.0 site which I migrated from 2.0 a while back. It's clear that the platform doesn't have a future so I am thinking of migrating. I appreciate that I will have to wait for the 3.0 archiver ( which I understand is due soon ) before I can start the process.

My question is......is there anything I could usefully be doing now to prepare and if so what?

Welcome to the forum!

What I would recommend doing at this time would be to get a Jamroom 5 installation setup so you can check it out and see how Jamroom functions. Jamroom 5 is pretty straight forward, but can take a little bit to get used to especially if you are coming from another system.

Hope this helps!

And just to follow that up with a suggestion to check out how Jamroom's "Quotas" work. Every user in a Jamroom system has 2 things: a "User Account" (this is what holds the users login info, password, email address, etc.) and a "User Profile" - this is what the public sees. Jamroom Quotas are applied to the User Profile, and define the feature set that the profile has access to. This allows you to (for example) have a "basic quota" that only allows Blogs, and then a "music quota" that allows Blogs and Audio files. BY simply changing the Quota of a User Profile you can change the features available to the users.

The other really powerful feature of Jamroom is that a User Profile can have multiple User Accounts associated with it (i.e. that's how our Jamroom team is all associated with this "Ning To Jamroom" profile - you can see all 4 of us are listed on the left). This allows multiple users (i.e. band members) to post blog entries, songs, etc. to their Band Profile.

This also goes the other direction as well - a single User Account can have access to multiple profiles (think an artist label that updates profiles for all the bands on their roster). This type of user is called a "Power User", and just like most everything, this is configured in the Quotas.

If you have any questions let us know - Jamroom is really flexible when it comes to user accounts, user profiles and quotas - you can mix and match them and combine them in a lot of different ways.

Hope this helps!

Another quick question....I see there has been much talk in the past on various forums about a Jamroom Joomla bridge. Does one exist? I have a large bookstore site on Joomla and would love to replace my Ning social site with a Jamroom site that was integrated with the Joomla site.

At this time there are really no bridges for Jamroom 5 - not that they couldn't be developed (there are easy events in Jamroom to do so) but the only thing we've found in the past that works for bridging is forum software (i.e. phpBB, etc.). Trying to bridge another CMS really requires that a corresponding bridge be developed for the other direction (i.e. Joomla -> Jamroom) otherwise things just don't work out very well.

From a JR standpoint I would rather spend my time addressing any shortcomings in JR that would require someone to continue to run Joomla on the side - i.e. what functionality is Joomla providing that Jamroom can't?

Let me know if that makes sense.

Thanks!

Understood:) For my part there are many things that I will continue to use Joomla for BUT social is not one of them. I have looked at Easysocial, JomSocial, CB etc and while they all have potential I have not seen anything that compares to Jamroom. Upon reflection it might be altogether better if I were to keep my social site members out of the Joomla site (Joomla ACL's are a major headache anyway) and continue to develop that as a 'Magazine' site alongside the Jamroom site.

The quotas feature you outlined above is very interesting indeed. Looking forward to experimenting with it.

I have installed the Jamroom core on my server and downloaded a few free modules. Are there any test modules I could usefully help with? Bearing in mind that I am on Ning 3 and dont have an archive I can use yet.

Send your URL, FTP and Jamroom logins to support[at]jamroom[dot]net and I'll put the Ning specific modules plus a couple of others for you to play with and hopefully get the hang of Jamroom and realise its potential, not just as an alternative platform to Ning.

Hi Paul

Did you need ongoing access? I just discovered that my partner changed the server password. I can send you the new one if you need it.

Have uploaded some modules for you to try. You'll need to login to JR and in the ACP, enable and configure them. If you're ok within that, I do not need access.
Thanks

Hi Paul

Yes I did log in and play around with them a little last night but had a few problems after I enabled the Ning modules. Unfortunately this morning I am unable to log in at all. The log in screen does not display :(

I see that as well. Not sure what might have happened.
I did try to FTP to look for any errors but the logins you sent yesterday no longer work.
If all else fails, I'd suggest starting again. Drop the database tables, delete the /data/config/config.php file then run the install again. The modules I uploaded yesterday would still be there and pre-installed now.

Then I guess that a file has become corrupt or has gone missing!!
Try re-uploading the whole of the Core again. If that doesn't fix it, do another install with the newly uploaded files.

I think the problems started last night when I clicked on 'View Full Screen' in the Npage screen after creating an Npage. Pages started appearing the way they do now.

Re uploaded the core and re installed ( did not drop tables ) and nothing has changed. Should I perhaps delete the whole Jamroom folder and re install without the new modules you added last night?

Let me check this out. I only added that full screen option the other day so there might be an issue with it!!

No - not seeing any issue with it this end.
Still can't ftp to your site.
Can you send the latest logins so that I can check it out your end?
Thanks

Ceri - Did you install the new Jamroom?
I ask because I dropped all the database tables, deleted all the old JR files, uploaded them all again, went to the page to go through the install procedure but there Jamroom was, already installed!!

Thank goodness for that - I thought I was going mad ;-)
That's fine. If it looks ok, start using it again, but am slightly concerned that you installed Jamroom whilst the last few files were still uploading, some some of the modules 'may' not have installed correctly.

Try installing it from the ACP and see if installs ok.
It might also be worth checking the error logs to see if anything critical happened during the install.
Or to be really safe, drop the DB tables again, delete the /data/config/config.php file and the /data/log files and re-install.

Thanks Paul...will do this tomorrow...despite these minor hiccups (mostly my fault) I am liking Jamroom more and more. One further question occurs to me though. Is it possible to have a front page activity feed ( a la ning ) which combines all updates from the site and allows comments on the front page?

Hi Ceri
Yes. Just put the following code in the template where you want the activity feed to show -

{jrCore_list module="jrAction" order_by="_created NUMERICAL_DESC" limit="20"}

I knocked together a skin specifically for Ning migrants last night that demonstrates all imported Ning features, including front page activity feeds. I've took the liberty of uploading it to your site so that you can take a look. Its called 'NingTastic' !!

For adding comments anywhere use something like -

{jrComment_form module="jrProfile" profile_id=$_profile_id item_id=$_item_id}

(You'll need to check that the names of the smarty variables passed into the function are available in the template)

Note that in Jamroom, comments are always on an item (Profile, Audio, Video whatever). You cannot have 'general' comments. If you want that, it might be worth you looking at the jrForum module.
