To add to Brian's blog (and before anyone asks) your Hosting Control Panel (HCP) will also transfer your existing Jamroom site onto your new server.

1) Install the free Hosting module on your existing site
2) Enter your existing site FTP details into the HCP.
3) Click 'Start Import'.
4) Sit back and watch it happen!!

Yep - we have a guide for it right here:

https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/jamroom-hosting/2547/importing-an-existing-jamroom-site-to-a-domain

As an example I moved my Genosis family site:

http://johnsonfamily.talldude.net/

which is now running on Jamroom Hosting - it took about 5 minutes to transfer 17 gigs (it was already on linode) - I did not touch SFTP once :)

OK so I am probably the first member here to do this from scratch so I have a few questions.
I have tired to set up my Mailgun, did the first part.. seemed OK. Then I get to the verification part and I am lost. I am assuming that Jamroom is my DNS provider, since I am using their server. But on the information generated from Jamroom I don't have TXT records,a C name, and I am not sure about the MX record either. When I go to the next page, I see that the IP address that Jamroom provided, does not match the one that mailgun has. I don't know how to proceed.
And obviously, I can't even start to upload my NIng download without all this, right?

Also the directions say to download to my folder found on my dashboard. I can't find or create a folder. And now the account I thought I had up seems to be gone.

Should I be ignoring some of these directions, since they had to do with not importing to Jamroom directly?

Once you enter your Mailgun API key into the JR hosting CP and save it, that is all you have to do - you don't have to worry about any of the settings for Mailgun - our API will take care of it for you:

https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/jamroom-hosting/2537/setting-up-mailgun-for-email-delivery

So you should be good to go!

Make sure you are entering the API key as it is shown to you when you log in to Mailgun. It will be in the format:

key-xxxxxxx

where xxxxxxx is a long string of numbers and letters.

It worked! Next issue...
Your current directions say:
"FTP to your Jamroom server and in the folder where Jamroom is installed, create a new folder called Ning_Archive. - See more at: https://www.jamroom.net/ning-to-jamroom/documentation/ning2jamroom/2072/step-3-upload-your-ning-archive-to-the-jamroom-site#sthash.FgpUzYGo.dpuf"
FTP? And I don't see where to put a folder.
Is it because I don't see the Ning archiving tool?

OK... we don't really have documentation on how to use FTP or SFTP, so I'm not sure how to help you right at this moment.

Can you contact us at support [at] jamroom [dot] net? We can try to help you out directly

Thanks!

FTP is a method to transfer files.

To use FTP you need an FTP program. Its just a way to copy stuff to your server.

Which FTP program you use will depend on whether your on Windows or Mac. I think:
filezilla works on both, not sure.

https://filezilla-project.org/

Download the client and put the login details in there.

Yeah we don't document that since it's not really related to Jamroom - it's just a internet "standard" way to transfer files. The page Michael linked to explains how it works.

Perry, get your FileZilla program/account going.
The windows on the left will be showing your 'local' stuff- on your computer. You need to get your filezilla set up so that first you can see your local computer content in the left side windows. Navigate to where you keep your JR and Ning stuff.
Then you need to put in the info to connect to your jamroom server so that your stuff on your JR server (folders, JR modules, other stuff) will be showing in the right hand windows...that way you can transfer things back and forth.

you'll need to fill in info in the upper boxes to make a connection to your (remote) JR server. The "Host" is your JR site IP address. Port: 222. Choose "SFTP" connection.
Login type: normal. User: jamroom
Password- your jr server access password.
then hit 'connect' and see what it says and does.

Once you successfully connect to your server, look for "sites" and then for your domain folder. In that you;ll see a folder called public_html. That's where all your JR stuff is. Inside that folder, you'll see your JR folders of stuff. Be careful not to delete stuff without really knowing what you are doing. Right click inside the area in the public_html folder to 'create directory' and you can create new folders...I have one called Lisa Misc. You will be uploading your ning archive into a folder you name Ning_Archive (use that exact name). don't put a whole Ning archive folder within another new folder. You could actually just upload your whole ning archive folder and then rename it Ning_Archive once its there...or upload one ning folder at a time (like "discussions", Groups" etc) into a new Ning_Archive folder you create in public_html folder. I renamed my ning archive folder "Ning_Archive" BEFORE i uploaded it to my JR server.

Somehow, you will want to 'save' or bookmark the site connection to your JR site before you disconnect, so that later you can just click on the extreme upper left drop down ox for 'sites' and it will suot-connect again ...using the 'site manager' of filezilla.

Hope somehow this helps.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for taking the time out to explain this to me. There is one thing that I think I am not getting.

Because I start Jamroom with a Jamroom server, I have nothing downloaded to my computer. I thought it was supposed to be on the Jamroom server. The only thing that I have are the Ning files stored on my portable drive, which have several folders for each one of the Ning apps ( like discussions, blogs, photos, etc). So that is my only local stuff.

I think that the disconnect in what I am asking is that most of you had another server to which you downloaded Jamroom, skins, Ning to Jamroom, etc. before and then moved. I am the first member here who started with a Jamroom server.

So to clarify:
1. What came with the Jamroom server?
2. Do I still have to download the Ning to Jamroom program or is it already on the server. If isn't, then I have to do that first.
3. Do I then proceed the way Lisa is explaining?

Quote:
1. What came with the Jamroom server?

The Jamroom server "hosts" Jamroom for you. Jamroom does NOT run on YOUR local computer (PC or Mac). It runs on the Jamroom Server.

Quote:
2. Do I still have to download the Ning to Jamroom program or is it already on the server. If isn't, then I have to do that first.

No - the only thing you download to YOUR computer (again your local PC or Mac) is the Ning Archive files (it sounds like you may already have these on your external hard drive?)

Also "Ning To Jamroom" is a set of modules that run inside Jamroom on your Jamroom server. It is not something you download and run on YOUR computer.

So at this time, you need to use FileZilla (FTP client) to connect to your Jamroom server and UPLOAD the Ning Archive to your Jamroom Server.

Just to clarify further for Perrie...
Assuming you now have a recent copy of your Ning Archive on your drive at home...

The Jamroom folders and files and modules etc remain on your JR server, stored by JR and backed up every day by them for you.
In that stuff (on the JR server, in the right side panel of Filezilla) you will see a folder called "public_html". That is the folder in which you are going to put your Ning_Archive folder which contains all your Ning backup/archive. Thus, once you successfully establish the filezilla sftp connection between your computer and the JR server, you'll have your Ning arcive folder selected in the left panel (on your computer at home), and you'll have the public_html folder open in your right panel (located on the JR server)...then you will be looking for an "upload" button to start your UPLOAD of your ning content to the JR server.

UPLOAD is where you are putting something from your location onto a location on the internet. DOWNLOAD is when you are pulling or copying something from the ("Remote")internet onto your home/("Local") computer or hard drive.

I have just now purchased the Ning to JR package, am still logged in to JR. Now I would like to purchase hosting at Jamroom, but have not yet found that orange button shown in the screen shot with the hosting anouncement.

I will keep scrolling about lookng for a purchase link, but if that fails will contact JR support directly.

It seems odd that this should be so hard to find. I would expect something this major (hosting) to have its own tab in the main menu of the JR website.

Could you try logging out and back in? I'm not sure what would keep you from seeing it. I have a "member level" test account I use here for testing and have confirmed it is working, so I know the quota and groups are all configured correctly. We've not had anyone else report an issue.

If you still cannot see it, please contact us at support [at] jamroom [dot] net and I can try logging in as your account and actually try to find what is up.

Thanks!
