Help! Changing Web Host Just To Run Genosis!

Hello! I stumbled upon Genosis by accident and decided I NEEDED it! I tried installing several times and there was issue after issue. Finally I emailed my web host and discovered the package I have will not run it, and their upgrade was really expensive. After many emails back and forth it was discovered they just aren't willing to keep me as a customer though I have been with them since 2005. Which leads me to my question....

What do I do now? I have always been with the same host and I do not know a thing about moving "my stuff" to a different host. My domain was purchased at the time I signed up. What do I need to do? Thanks for all your help! Lisa

Genosis runs is powered by Jamroom 5. The reasons for the recommended hosting are outlined in this thread:
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/jamroom-hosting/11446/jamroom-recommended-hosting

and the hosting is here:
https://www.jamroom.net/r/recommended-hosting

With that you get domain registration included, so you don't need anything else.

There's nothing wrong with keeping your current host running the sites that do run on them right where they are. Or you could move them over. Whichever is easiest for you.

Along with the hosting, they also have 1-click easy install of jamroom.
(watch the video on this page to see how its done)
https://www.jamroom.net/features

Then from there in the ACP (admin control panel) you can click on the Genosis modules to install them.

It depends on what sort of 'stuff' you have on your existing server, of course, but moving it to a new host is basically downloading it to your PC, then uploading it to its new home. You should then be able 'point' your domain name to the new host via its DNS settings.
If you go with Arvixe, part of the package is a new domain name. Alternatively, you can ask them to transfer your existing domain to their safe keeping. Do this if your domain is registered with your existing host and you want to sever all ties with them ;-)

Good Morning! The only "stuff" I have is 2 WordPress blogs and my domain. I cannot afford to have two servers for the long term, and as they were unwilling to be to do anything to keep a long term customer. Needless to say, I am no longer interested in staying with them. Which is why I am here - I really do not know what needs to be done first.
I purchase from Arvixe... then what?
I want my domain to go with me, is there a process asking them to transfer it? Is it typically a long process? My email is part of my domain, so that is a concern.
I have considered only briefly what I might have to do to move WordPress, but I am not too worried about that yet. I just don't know what to do first to get up and running and receiving email. :-) Thanks for your patience, gentlemen.

No problem ;)

Yeah Arvixe can take care of all of that for you as part of the domain "transfer" - I've not personally done it with them, but I know it takes a few days for the domain to actually transfer, and they should be able to help you out.

A quick question however - are you already using a desktop software for your genealogy research? If so, how large is your existing tree? I've been working with another user that has a very large tree (75,000+ ancestors) and I think for trees that large it is better to go with a VPS level plan (more expensive) than the Shared hosting (it runs better).

Hope this helps!

Yes, I use Legacy Family Tree software, and my tree isn't really large... less than 2000 people. I'm not doing any name studies nor am I a name collector... pretty detailed for the most part. :-) Yes, everything you gentlemen are saying is very helpful... thank you so much!

The process will go like this:
* purchase the package you want at arvixe
* tell them you want to move your stuff over
* they will ask you for any details they need
* they will then do the move over for you.
* they will tell you its done and ask you to update your name servers to point to XXXXXXXXXXX
* you will update your name servers to what they tell you.

At this point you will have your previous hosting and your new hosting. Check that everything is as you want it before cancelling your old hosting.

Thanks, Michael! Very interesting. So, this is how I understand it: I can sign up with Arvixe with my domain, and it will remain at my current web host until I decide to transfer it. Thank you! I have worked all day, and just got home a while ago. I have been in contact with Arvixe already and when I transfer my domain it will take 5-10 days (gasp!) I'm hoping I can jump on this tomorrow. (I've been really bad at time management lately... ) I am appreciative, Lisa

I think the domain transfer actually goes faster than that - they give you the longer time frame since they don't know ahead of time if they are going to run into issues. I had helped another customer with their move and I believe they had the domain transferred in just a couple of days.

Hope this helps!

WHOO ~ it's the weekend! I have purchased with my new host, Arvixe, and I'm trying to figure it out on my own and move stuff. I'm stumbling, but I think I am making progress. Still having an issue with Genosis uploading. It keeps uploading the same file: modules\jrcore\tools\diff

I'm using Filezilla... once it reaches 100% it isn't supposed to start over, right? It has started uploading the same file over 5 times now... I do not know what I'm doing wrong. Anything? ~ Lisa

I think I've had enough for today as I'm practically in tears. This is what I get:

404 Not Found
The server can not find the requested page: sheep.arvixe.com/~tooshy/genosis/(port 80)
Please forward this error screen to sheep.arvixe.com's WebMaster.

http://sheep.arvixe.com/~tooshy/genosis/

For whatever reason I cannot get the file .htaccess to upload into the root directory of the genosis folder. It shows that it is uploading, but I cannot see it in cpanel. ~ Lisa

It's a new day, and it still won't work though I deleted everything and started fresh again. During the upload process using Filezilla I get a message asking me what I want to do as there are duplicate files? I have chosen just about every option and I still cannot run the program. When I chose overwrite the target file because the source file is larger, that is when that one file continually keeps uploading itself. It gets to 100%... waits... starts over. I am at a loss at this point. :-( ~ Lisa

Send you Arvixe logins to support@jamroom.net and I'll have a go at FTPing from our end to see what the problem is.

This looks like the correct URL to view the page at:
http://sheep.arvixe.com/~tooshy/

It looks like there is a lot missing.

on Arvixe there is a 1 click install, you shouldn't need to upload anything. Unless you want to, do you want to do it via FTP?

The video of how to do the 1 click install is here:

I'm betting that things aren't going to work correctly without a domain pointing to the account.
