I have never set up a server before. Should I use Debian, Ubuntu or some other OS?

I'd use Ubuntu - you can follow my guide here:

Hope this helps!

OK DigitalOcean has just changed things. I had a spare machine but the pricing they offer kinda makes my machine unnecessary. I'll probably just move all my stuff there and save my machine for rendering. With the high speed connection I have and ssd hosting, development should be pretty quick. Speed was my concern.

Thanks a lot.

No problem - the little $5 DO server is really good for dev.

I still use a local server, here's the guide for that:

My first impulse was to set up a render engine. It allows me to keep working while 2 hour renders are done elsewhere. But I also wanted a faster dev. I expect this hosting will be fast enough.

Thanks.

For dev, make sure and get your droplet in the data center closest to your physical location too - that helps a little bit in the response time.
