I need thread discussions for my forum so I would like to use a group for my forum. I have gotten this far:

I am not sure how to configure this so that a group will be the host of my forum.
Help please.

You need to first create a profile group that is to be used for the forum, then enter it into the NingImport configuration.

I'd suggest creating a profile called 'Community' then adding a group called 'Forum' to that profile.

To create the profile -
ACP=> Profiles=> User Profiles=> Tools=> Create Profile
Allocate 'admin' as the profile user.
(Prior to doing this you might want to create a quota just for this profile with just Groups enabled)
Then, as admin, goto http://yoursite.com/community and create the group called 'Forum'.
Whilst there, get the profile ID by clicking on the update (gear wheel) and looking at the ID in the URL.
Now go back to NIngImport config and enter the profile ID in the 'Site Forum Profile ID' field and 'Forum' (no quotes) in the Group Forum field.

So this is where I stand.
I am at the part where I go to my site/community... but I do not see where I create a group called "Forum"
Here is the screenshot:

And when I go to get the addy, is this the right one?
http://thenewstalkerscom.jamroomhosting.com/sbmenu/create
I would like this checked before I make another mess.
Thanks!

sbmenu/create is for adding menu items to the top level system menu. Not for creating groups.

To create groups, the module needs to be enabled for that profile. Go to:
ACP -> PROFILE GROUPS -> GROUP SUPPORT -> QUOTA CONFIG

And check the "Allowed on Profile" checkbox after selecting the quota that that COMMUNITY profile is in from the dropdown list.

That will enable the GROUPS tab to show on the profile that is in your screenshot. From there you will see all the options to create groups.

Right now in your screenshot there is no GROUPS tab on the profile menu.

Michael,
Sorry I have been MIA. I have been quite sick.
Will this create a group that I can use as the group's main forum?
I just want to double check before I do it.

Also when I start to import the the present download from NIng, I don't have to do this, right?

Sad to hear you've not been feeling well. Hope your feeling better soon. :)

Did you see this thread?

"NEW - Ning to Jamroom 'Full' Import Services"
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/27231/new-ning-to-jamroom-full-import-services

Pauls getting pretty good with the ning imports so he's set up a new Jamroom offering.

It skips the part of the ning admin having to download anything from Ning and we handle the whole move over. No need to FTP anything. Might be of interest. :)

perrie:....Will this create a group that I can use as the group's main forum?....
no. It will only allow that profile to create a group if they want to. So it adds the ABILITY to add a group. To create a group from there you would click on the button provided to go to that page, then click on the + button to add a new group.

Thanks Michael for your kind words and help! :)

And thanks for the link. No I haven't seen it.

So here is where I get confused. Right now, each member of my site can create a group/groups that they admin to and other members on the site join. How do I get that to happen on this platform?

Update: Just went to check out that link... and it is very helpful. But in order to do that, I have to have the ninga skn ready to go, right? Oh boy.. there is a long way to go till I am ready for that.

I really wish I had a better understanding of how Jamroom functions. It would make things so much easier. Right now I am handling each issue as they come up.

perrie:..... Right now, each member of my site can create a group/groups that they admin to and other members on the site join....

If your talking about your Jamroom site, they can do that because they are in a Quota that allows their profile to have groups.

If your talking about on your ning site and you want to have that for your members, then select their quota from the dropdown menu in that same location:
ACP -> PROFILE GROUPS -> GROUP SUPPORT -> QUOTA CONFIG

and check the "allowed on profile" checkbox and save.

---
short overview of how jamroom works:
* adding a module to the system means that functionality exists in the system but not necessarily anyone can use it.
* each module has a QUOTA CONFIG tab and that determines who can use the module.
* If you are allowed by your quota to use a module, then it will appear as a button on your profile.

Hi Michael,

I think we went off track here a bit (not sure) but how do I put into the community page a group that will be used as my forum. Also for the rest of the groups, I use the directions that you gave me on top, right?

Maybe it would help you to understand what I am shooting for if you look at my present Ning 2.0 group. Here is the addy:

The above is important stuff that ex-ningers need to know.
For example, I have the Polls module, but I have it set so that only me and admins can create polls, not regular members. I 'could' create a new quota (role) if I wanted, a duplicate of the members quota except with polls allowed, and then members could request to be moved to that quota where they could create polls. Maybe I would charge a fee for being in that quota and having polling ability... see how it works Perrie? Multiply this by the dozens of features and abilities...the possibilities are endless. :)

Hi Strumelia!

I can see the potential in Jamroom, but it is getting my head wrapped around it, that I am having an issue with. I have been watching the Udemy videos and they are a bit helpful, but for instance, while I get that you have to turn on quotas, I still don't understand how I am actually building a site, with the Ninga skin. I am also having a problem understanding how to make a group into my central forum on my landing page (or any page for that matter), and the forum is the heart of my group.

I love the idea of polls, too. I do use them with my group. I might even let my members have them...but first I have to get the basics set up.

So right now I am focused on getting a group to act as my main forum.

Thanks for your help :)

I did explain how to do this above -
Quote: You need to first create a profile group that is to be used for the forum, then enter it into the NingImport configuration.

I'd suggest creating a profile called 'Community' then adding a group called 'Forum' to that profile.

To create the profile -
ACP=> Profiles=> User Profiles=> Tools=> Create Profile

Let me know if any of that is unclear and needs expanding.
Cheers

Paul,

Above you will find what I think I created as the community group. Does it look right?

Now you lose me here:

Quote: (Prior to doing this you might want to create a quota just for this profile with just Groups enabled)

Let me clarify my question. Should I make a new quota for admin for groups? And when you say groups, there are three options: group discussions, group pages and group support. I am assuming it is NOT group support, but which of the other two is it?

Hi Perrie
You are creating a profile called 'Community' that is going to effectively host the site's global forum. What I'm suggesting is that profile has its own quota with just groups enabled.
Actually this would only be necessary if your regular profile quota didn't have groups enabled but it would be a good idea to do it anyway as it might make things easier for you to manage as admin as this Community profile is a bit different to your regular profiles.
As for the three group modules, it is only the 'Group Support' module that is quota enabled. The other two (id installed) will see an enabled Group Support module and then work with it to provide those additional group features.
