The Main Tree vs The Research Only Tree

Hello! Per usual I have managed to confuse myself. :-) To move the information into the Main tree and still leave it in the research only tree do I create a gedcom from each research only tree I have and upload it that way? Or is there a different (and better) way? I am worried about the user profile numbers changing. :-) Thanks! Lisa

Right now there is no way to "copy" to a new tree and leave the id's intact, since those id's must be unique system wide (not just in the tree).

However you can move profiles between trees - would that work?

I think so. LOL! My default tree is empty, and I only have "research only" trees. Or is it best to merge all the research trees into the default tree and not have separate "research only" trees? How do YOU do it? :-)

Researcher trees are handy - here's how I do it:

- I have my "main" (default) tree - the "Johnson and Fisher Family Tree":

http://johnsonfamily.talldude.net/

- When I am working on a branch I feel sure about, I will often just work right in the main tree

- If I am not sure about something and will likely be adding/removing ancestor profiles frequently, I will create a new Researcher only tree and do my work there

- When I feel it is "ready to go" I move the ancestor profiles from the research tree to my main tree and delete the research tree.

That keeps things pretty organized and it has worked really well for me so far. I know not everyone probably works like I do though, so let me know if you do it differently, or feel like Genosis could be updated to fit your work flow better.

Thanks!

I have poked through your site and found it wonderful!! How do I move my ancestors from the research only tree into the main tree? Will this affect any of the folks who are currently working in the tree?

No - it won't affect anyone, but it will be in a new tree so they will need to look for it there:

1) find the ancestor profile you want to move
2) click on the gear icon to "modify" the ancestor profile
3) click on the "Move To Another Tree" button in the header
4) select the tree you want to move the profile to
5) check the "include ancestors" if you want to also move all of this profile's ancestors (parents and further back)
6) Press "Move person to selected tree"

That's it - they should be in the new tree now.

Let me know if that helps.

It does help! I have about a handful of "research only" trees, and no default tree, and I was wondering if I clicked "merge tree" into the main tree if that would end up changing the ancestor profile numbers? Pretty much I decided I want to change how I originally set things up, but I don't want to screw it all up either!

No - the profile id's are not changed - what basically happens is that their tree_id is updated to the new tree so they show up there instead of in the old one.

One thing I forgot to add is that after you move the ancestor profiles, you need to search for them in the new tree and "link" them into your tree by adding a new child for them and selecting an existing profile in the tree - let me know if that makes sense.

Thanks!

It makes sense... do I have to do that for every single ancestor if I merge them or only if I "move" them?

Let's say you move a profile and all it's ancestors - all the "links" between the profile you are moving are all retained - you just need to link it into the right place in the tree - i.e. add an existing profile as a child - everything else will remain linked as it was.

Let me know if that helps.
