Media Export

Hello!

I am asking questions as things come up. :-) If I am exporting to a gedcom a family tree that has pictures, how do I get the pictures to go with the gedcom? How do I upload them with the gedcom? I see the box "import media archive" but when I click on it it opens up to select files on my hard-drive. I have never really worked with gedcoms before to know what to do with the pictures. Thanks! Lisa

So the important thing to know is that a GEDCOM file is simply a text file - there's no way to "include" any other files (images, whatever) inside the GEDCOM file - all it can do is have links to media files.

So that's what when you import a GEDCOM file you have to separately upload the media files using Genosis's import media archive - that makes it so when an import is going on, Genosis can grab the actual media file the GEDCOM is referencing.

Genosis doesn't have a media export function, since the assumption is that all the media is already on your PC and you upload it to Genosis - not the other way around.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks!

Got it! I knew a .gedcom was only text so I was trying to figure out how to work with the pictures. So, if I export from the Benson family, and I want to upload that same .gedcom to the main tree I upload the .gedcom first and then the pictures? Thanks!

Actually you would:

1) Export the Benson GEDCOM
2) Upload any media files from the Benson tree to the Media Archive
3) Import the Benson GEDCOM to the main tree

Note that I'm going to be adding the ability for you to "copy" (not merge) an existing tree into another tree - I've got other work that's ahead of it in my queue, but in the next couple weeks I should be able to develop that, and that would make it much easier for you.

Hope this helps!

That would be absolutely perfect to be able to copy folks over instead of doing it the .gedcom way!! I'm looking forward to all the tweaks. Thank you for such a superior program!
