solved Form Designer - Setup? Initialize?

I'm wanting to ask some specific questions when new members sign-up. I'm confused on what this means on the form designer:

"The following designer forms have not been setup yet for this module:

user/signup

These forms will be initialized the first time they are viewed. It is recommended that you view all forms for this module before using the Form Designer".

What do I do???

PS: I think I've figured out how to make the different questions in the form for sign-up but I don't see them when I do a test sign-up (& I still see the above message in the form designer).

So the Form Designer is "initialized" the first time a form is "viewed" by a Master Admin. This message is telling you that the user/signup view has NOT been initialized yet - so while logged in as the master admin go to:

http://yoursite.com/user/signup

and this will initialize that "view" so you can customize it in the form designer.

Hope this helps!

Ok. Thanks @brian. Now how do I get my "customized" sign-up questions to show on the sign-up form (to make the new members fill out)?

I want to be able to SEE their answers before approving them. (I currently have it set for admin validation . . . not sure if email validation would be better). On Ning - it has an email validation and then another form is there (right after they validate their email) to get them to answer specific questions.

Keep it on 'admin validation', then use the form designer to set the same fields in the user account view. Admin can then check their answers prior to approving, or not.

I'm ok until I get to the part of:
"use the form designer to set the same fields in the user account view."
At that point I'm a little lost at the crossroads.

Paul are you able to give a couple more step by step details for getting to these locations and doing this? Otherwise I'll just have to ask someone the same question later when preparing to go live. I definitely need to check and update my signup questions so that I see the new member's answers before approving them (it's been my most effective way of blocking spammers on Ning)
But if you are too busy or can't go into such detail, I'll understand.

@strumelia Account Settings -> Form Designer -> then in the upper right of the form there is a drop down that says: user/account & user/signup.

I just made both of those forms match up (at first I didn’t know that there was 2 of them).

Checkout the Ning Import docs under 'Ning Signup Questions' - Its covered there.

OK I think i got it now.

I notice that "password, and repeat password", by default, are 'required' on the user/signup form but NOT set as 'required' on the user/account form. Is this to enable people staying logged in for up to 2 weeks if they select that option?

Also- Once we have migrated and have left Ning and are LIVE...can we just GET RID OF the ning signup questions and create our own new ones for NEW member signups to answer? -If we do that however, what will happen to the questions and answers now showing on our imported ning members' profile pages? Thanks for clarifying.

Sure you can get rid of the signup questions, or change them to other questions. As to "What will happen?", its really up to you. What do you want to happen?

If it was me, I would view the situation like this:
* I have a bunch of data collected from users
* This info is displayed on their profile.
* I want to collect different data.

Seams like the question is: do I want to keep displaying the already collected info, or just hide it.

The form will collect the info, the template will display the info. What info you choose to display is totally up to you. You can collect it and not display it. Or you could check if it exists and only display it if it does.

Its your site, you get to decide. :)

Thanks- I do understand that i get to decide, and that the form collects and the template displays, etc.

My question is a bit different, let me clarify it-
Say on Ning I had 3 signup questions that asked about a member's music taste. These questions and the member's answers are currently displayed on their imported profile pages., That's fine.
BUT...once the site goes live, say I CHANGE the sign up questions to be different- 3 questions about how long the prospective member has played music, what is their favorite song...
New members will I assume have those questions and answers shwoing now on their profile page (if I choose to 'show' of course)...but what will then happen to the older members' questions and answers showing on theri pages? Will the old questions remain on the older profiles, or will they be the new questions shown with the old answers...therefore not making sense?

Also, my other little question: I notice that "password, and repeat password", by default, are 'required' on the user/signup form but NOT set as 'required' on the user/account form. Is this ok? and is the purpose of it to enable people staying logged in for up to 2 weeks if they select that option? Thanks!

I don't think anything will change since the "key names" for the old questions are not going to be the same as the key names for the NEW questions.

Yes - this allows the user to NOT be forced to change their password every time they update their user info (which you don't want).

No - updating passwords has nothing to do with the login cookie time.

Hope this helps!

Ok, yes I get it! (and glad I decided it was smart not to change the default on that... lol )
I think this resolves all my questions on this- thanks.
