Following/unfollowing a topic

Here on jamroom .net you can still follow/unfollow a topic even if the topic has been closed for you. Which doesn't seem right.

I found that out when revisiting an old thread (last posted to 4 days ago) but couldn't add what I wanted to add because the topic is closed after 3 weeks or 4 days. Great.

The user ends up on my forum, doesnt get notified of threads, cant pm me, cant email me, I cant pm them, I cant email them...

... and I can't post to the original thread.

Finding things and communicating with people is not really working for me, but maybe I am doing it wrong. Should I be using the timeline?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Education, learning resources, TEL, AR/VR/MR, CC licensed content, panoramas, interactive narrative, sectional modules (like jrDocs), lunch at Uni of Bristol. Get in touch if you share my current interests or can suggest better :)

I think the private notes feature would be great if enabled on here. But I could also see that being a problem (for developers).

As the forum owner you can always edit the topic (click on the modify button for the FIRST entry in the topic) and uncheck the "topic locked" option and save - that will re-open the topic.

You can also turn off auto-locking of topics in your forum settings.

We have it enabled here on our forum since this was a problem previously - having someone post an "update" to a 2 year old topic does not help much.

What we may need to do is update the daily maintenance listener and delete any "follows" on topics that are closed.

Yes - they are purposefully disabled here for non-subscribing members otherwise they will be used as a support channel, and we need all support requests to be either here on the forum, or via ticket.

Was just thinking out loud on that. I'm fine with forum support. You guys have been super helpful.

Maybe something like:

- add an email notification for @[username] tags in forums.
- if someone is tagged in a forum topic, the person tagged is emailed.
- the tagged person receives an email w/ the forum response they're tagged in, and a link to the topic.
- person being tagged could turn that off if desired.

It would be a way to send an email without enabling inbox.
I suppose it would only apply to the jamroom.net site.
Could be experimental. Could be more work than it's worth... just a thought.

I think the "follow" a topic works well and is easy to understand. If no one has bothered to update a topic in 3 weeks then it's probably best that it be locked and a new topic be opened, since the situation may have changed.
