How often does the search index rebuild itself, automatically? Never?

Today I happened to do field-specific search on my site for Poland as a profile location, and had some results. That was OK.

Then I tried a broader search across all profiles, and FEWER results were returned. The smaller number was odd, so I went to search module, and manually refreshed the search indexes.

When I returned to my search box, and did the search across all profiles, a large number of results were obtained.

So what does this mean? Do we always need to manually refresh indexes to keep them up to date?

I can't find any information about the frequency of automatic indexing in the JR search system. Is there a setting for this?

Can we ask the system to automatically refresh search indexes daily at midnight, for example?

Or is the search index build system not automatic?

The note on the rebuilding of the search index tool says that it only needs to be run if any of the search config parameters have been changed, so I guess that the index table is dynamic and doesn't need periodic refreshing.
A test of this might be to add 'Poland' to another profile location field and then see if that profile then shows in the searches.
