solved Can I build a new site and then import members from old site?

I am curious about the possibility of building a new site then importing members and other content from an old site.

My old site is cluttered and hardly used. I have enough space to build a new site on my JR hosted server, with a new domain name.

Is the following a feasible approach?

1. Design new and simpler site with no member (signup) quotas, and a limited number of modules.

2. Import the old (remote) site, in its entirety, without deleting the contents of the new site (there is a check box option for this inside the import tool)

3. Delete all the unwanted contents of the old site (note: there is no obvious option for cloning/importing only the wanted contents from an old site).

Further questions:
(a) When this is done, will all necessary modules remain in place, and will unused modules from the old site be automatically removed?

(b) Will members of the old site be able to login to the new site, at the new domain, with the email, username and password details they are using at the old site?

What you propose could work but you would first need to clone any skin work on the new site to a new skin so that it doesn't get overwritten during the import. There would then be a lot of work to delete all the unwanted content and removing the unwanted modules/skins etc.

What I would recommend is looking into the Importer/Exporter modules instead - https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/importing-merging-sites-to-jamroom/4725/overview

Using these modues you can selectively export/import just members/blogs/groups etc. See attached screenshot. This may make the whole process easier for you.

Yes.

Thanks. That does look like a better option.

At this stage, I am not sure if I should import anything at all from the old site. It might be better for me to test an entirely new design to see if it is inherently more attractive for newly arriving visitors.

If it is better, then I can ask members of the old site how they would like me to proceed: move them all over in large blocks, or let them move and build new profiles of their own accord.

I will call this thread solved for now.
