I know when I copy/paste the URL for a Youtube video into a post, it'll present the video as playable right there in the forum or group post. (without the video having to be added to the jr site as 'local embed')

Is this url-pasting "play it right in the post" feature something I can activate easily for Vimeo videos as well?

This isn't supported in the Vimeo module. I'm not sure why. It might be a licencing thing, or lack of a suitable player, or that it was just overlooked. I'll see if I can find out.

Actually I was wrong on this (sorry).
Embedded Vimeo videos are supported and are working fine for me.

How are you trying to do this, and in what text field?

That's not quite what I mean Paul.
I have a member who added a Vimeo video to my site that does not meet our guidelines to be in our video section, so I removed it. I suggested to him that he could instead embed it in a forum discussion post and that the video would show up and play right there in the post.
So...
The video in question is not accessible by the usual 'embed local media' button in the text editor window, --> since it's not 'local', it exists only on Vimeo, not on our site. Knowing that,....

Yes, he could simply paste the URL to the video into his post, and it'd be a hotlink bringing people to his Vimeo page.
Now when someone does that url pasting thang with any YOUTUBE video url, the text editor converts it into a player that will show and play the video right there in the post without being taken off site.
This does not seem to work when pasting an url for a vimeo video however...it only shows up as the dry text link, not live in a player within the post. This is what I'm asking about.
Is there a setting or simple code I could add that would do the same for Vimeo videos as currently happens for YT videos?

If you past the Vimeo URL into a forum post, and you have the Media URL Scanner module activated, the vimeo player should show in the post, as seen in the bottom post here:

Hope this helps!

Hi Douglas, I do have the Media URL Scanner module activated, and also have its 'expanded media' box checked. The pasted url converts to a player in a forum post for YT videos, but not for Vimeo videos.
See here where the member and also my moderator tried pasting the Vimeo url into a post...it only produces a text hotlink:

You are running JR 6.2.0, I'd guess that since this works on my dev site, which is 6.3.0.b1 then it has been fixed for the next version, as you can see here:

Hope this helps!

Actually, this is working for me running Core 6.2.0 and modules all downloaded from the Marketplace -

Maybe its down to your configuration?

Let me have login and I'll take a look.

The problem you are seeing, I believe, is when pasting Vimeo URLs into the html editor field, and it also applies to YouTube (and other) URLs pasted in.
If the original item copied was already a link, the whole item, including the tag is copied and subsequently pasted into the editor. The Jamroom process that looks for links in displayed text jumps over them if all ready linked, so they are displayed 'as is'. This is necessary as users may well want to construct their own links in the editor.
The workaround is to be sure and copy/paste links in plain text.

Ok i think i understand Paul.
Happily, my members don't seem to very often need to post a Vimeo video into a forum post that 'has to' play right there. I can tell my 6 moderators to remember this about the plain text pasting, and hopefully when someone complains about it in future, we'll at least know how to work around it and get results. Maybe one day an update will resolve the issue.. or Vimeo will go out of business.. lol.
Thank you so much for taking the time to delve into this.. it sure was mystifying for a while there!
I'll mark this finished.

Just a final update to this, to help future people who might have the same problem and be searching for answers...

On windows, I didn't get results from pasting 'as plain text' option on right click pasting. (seems to work on Macs though)
What I found worked for me on windows is the TinyMCE 'Remove Formatting' button on my site's text editor window. You may have that button already, if not you can add it to the TinyMCE toolbar for your site.
Here's a pic of the steps that will solve this 'pasted url of Vimeo videos' issue on my site:
