Has the Discussion module been discontinued?

It was taken out of the Marketplace recently as it was being used only by a couple of people and there is a better alternate for new users (the Forum module). If you want it I'll put it in a custom release channel.

Yep - this was removed since it is also is not very performant - if you plan on having thousands of discussions, use the Forum module - it is much better equipped to scale.

I had only seen it recently, I think in beta, and was trying it. I thought it was something new, but sounds like it was maybe something older that was replaced by the Forum early on?

It was something custom created for some Ning users that wanted a forum that operated more like the Ning "forum". To be honest it was never meant to be released - I'm not sure how it ended up in the Marketplace.

It's not scalable and is not something you want to use at this time.
