solved How to turn off the e-commerce Cart icon in my site menu?

I am very gradually trying to learn how to use (or not use) Foxycart and PayPal on my JR site.

Today I tried to turn everything off, by dis-enabling the e-commerce modules across all quotas.

Despite doing this, there is still a cart icon in the main menu.

I don't want that to show while I am still trying to learn how to use the e-commerce options.

I also don't want to de-register from Foxycart, as I still hope to use it eventually.

What skin is this on? I suspect that you might need to disable the FoxyCart module as well.

Yep - In the Ninja header_menu_desktop template -
            {* Add in Cart link if jrFoxyCart module is installed *}
            {if jrCore_module_is_active('jrFoxyCart') && strlen($_conf.jrFoxyCart_api_key) > 0}
                <li>
                    {jrCore_lang skin=$_conf.jrCore_active_skin id="2" default="cart" assign="cart"}
                    <a href="{$_conf.jrFoxyCart_store_domain}/cart?cart=view">{jrCore_image image="cart44.png" width=24 height=24 alt=$cart}</a>
                    <span id="fc_minicart"><span id="fc_quantity"></span></span>
                </li>
            {/if}
So just disable the FoxyCart module whilst its not in use.

"..disable the FoxyCart module whilst its not in use."

How exactly?

I already unchecked the "Allowed on Profile" option box on all quotas of the site.

Thanks

That worked, but only after I unchecked the modules for "Service Shop" and "Merchandise".

The module for "PayPal Buy it Now" is still enabled, and the system did not ask me to uncheck that, so it must work independently from Foxycart,

These three modules work together:

Foxycart - our portal to diverse payment services (located in E-commerce module collection)
Service Shop - for selling services (located in the Profiles module collection)
Merchandise - for selling physical things (located in the Profiles module collection)

Key questions:

1. Can the individual profile owner set up a shop for services or things that utilizes Foxycart, independently from the site owner (Admin) - regardless of whether or not the site owner requires a percentage of sales?

2. How does the profile owner with a service shop or selling merchandise build a relationship with Foxycart?

3. I would like to change the Service Shop and Merchandise module settings so that they are located under E-commerce rather than under Profiles in ACP. Will this affect the function of these modules in any way?

I can see documentation for these three modules individually, but not any documentation that shows how they work together, from the point of view of the network owner, and from the point of view of the profile owner.

I now have only the "PayPal Buy it Now" Module enabled, the menu cart icon is gone (along with the horse!), but my profile on that quota cannot see any information related to PayPal. The profile form is is just a standard profile form as designed by me.

I may need to add a PayPal address field that displays only to my Shopfront quota for which PayPal has been enabled.

I will keep investigating. At least, by restricting my site to the PayPal Buy It Now, I should be able to discover how to set this up without being confused by Foxycart system.

researchcooperative:...The module for "PayPal Buy it Now" is still enabled, and the system did not ask me to uncheck that, so it must work independently from Foxycart....
Yes, independent.

Key questions:

1. Can the individual profile owner set up a shop for services or things that utilizes Foxycart, independently from the site owner (Admin) - regardless of whether or not the site owner requires a percentage of sales?

Yes. If that profile is in a quota that has access to the service module, then they will be able to sell services. The percentage that admin keeps will be the same for all profiles in that quota.

2. How does the profile owner with a service shop or selling merchandise build a relationship with Foxycart?

They don't. All money goes into the admins account, then admin sends the money out to them at regular intervals.

3. I would like to change the Service Shop and Merchandise module settings so that they are located under E-commerce rather than under Profiles in ACP. Will this affect the function of these modules in any way?

No, change away. The category is set on the modules INFO tab, changing it will only change its location in the ACP.

The Paypal module is different than the foxycart one, Paypal is simpler and payments go direct to the profile owner, the admin cant keep any percentage.

The paypal module was never planned to be built, it only got built because there was much dissatisfaction with the need to pay foxycart for their service. You cant sell subscriptions with the Paypal module.

Re the Q&A above:
1. Great.
2. Hmmm. Personally I am nervous about the idea of having an account that manages other people's money, but for actual commercial websites this should be good.
3. Great.

I think "PayPal Buy It Now" will have many uses.

I can imagine using it to set up a one-off donations page for my site. I can "sell" certificates in return for donations of different amounts.

This may be more cost-effective than Foxycart subscriptions option (in so far as people are able to use PayPal). This will depend on the nature of each site.

Thanks again,

#2 I'm, nervous in the other direction. Someone is selling a service from MY site, that they collect the cash for directly, then they don't do what they said they would. If you have the cash still, you can return it. If you don't.......

For Donations you dont even need any module, just get the button code from paypal for donate and drop it in a template.

Thanks for the tip/reminder.

I have done this once before, using PayPal buttons to collect conference fees for a conference I organized. It worked well, but I will have to study how I made buttons for different fee levels.

My feeling is that it will be simpler to do using the JR implementation.

ps
Acting as a cash broker between service providers and customers might be a way to earn income, but not is not a job I want to undertake now. In fact, brokers (cash or otherwise) are needed in the world of publishing, but identifying and supporting dependable brokers would be a another major task!

It's really very simple.

Just cut and paste the code from this page:
https://www.paypal.com/yt/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_pdn_donate_techview_outside

For different levels of donation just make multiple buttons, then change the amount for each one.
