Have just released two modules to the beta channel - Importer and Exporter. These are complimentary modules that allow for Jamroom sites, and ultimately other CMSs via a plugin framework, to be imported or merged with existing Jamroom sites.
Checkout the documentation for these modules to get a full understanding of what they do and how you can use them.

Wow!! This is incredibly interesting. I am assuming that for the moment this tool is principally concerned with facilitating imports from Ning sites (and other Jamroom sites) BUT I am wondering can/will this be extended over time to allow imports from ...let's say Joomla/Wordpress etc?

That's exactly what these modules are about. Currently there are Exporter plugins for Jamroom, Ning3 (because that was an easy one to do) and 'CSV' that allows manually prepared dumps from other databases to the exported and merged. If there is more Ning2 interest, I'll build a plugin for that and the current NingImport module will become redundent. If there is then sufficient interest from people wanting to import Joomla/WP/Whatever to JR, plugins could be built.

I would LOVE to import my Ecards and Quiz modules from the Joomla site I have here:- http://welsh-american-bookstore.com

BUT, even though what I have there is built on free versions of two Joomla extensions, wouldn't that raise some licensing issues. I mean, essentially one would be duplicating not just the data but also the coded functionality of both if they were to be exported to another platform?

You would only be able to import content that is compatible with Jamroom and its modules, ie. members (imported as profiles and users), blogs, audio, video, photos, forum posts, comments etc. I don't know what these Joomla Ecards and Quizes are but it doesn't sound as though JR has anything compatible? As for licencing, I guesss that depends on whether you, or the CMS 'own' your content.
