Contact Form Spam

I'm beginning to get quite a lot of contact form spam. I'm using the Simple Form feature. I added the "Human Check" box and marked it as required...still getting the spam. What else can I do? Anyone?

If you have the "Human Check" box, then it is a real person doing the spamming, about the only thing you can do is ban their IP and or email address using the ban module. If you have it set so the user has to be logged in to use the form, then you can remove their account as well.

Unfortunately, not a lot. I get it all the time from my live sites. Its real people posting stuff so 'anti-bot' techniques don't work.

Thanks guys. Kinda what I thought. I battle it everyday with the WordPress sites I manage. Since our migration is still fairly recent, I have this form set to help those with login issues....therefore they do not have to be logged in to use it.

I recently bravely opened a new contact form and, hey presto, the global spamsters are onto it! Within just a few hours.

Now I found a spam blocking service that offers APIs for sites facing exactly this situation, making use of their in house library of verified spam IP addresses.

The API does a check before showing the user the contact form. If the IP address is on the list, no contact.

Seems like a good idea. Manually adding IP addresses with the Banned Item tool is not going to be possible.

Does JR already have a pre-screening system available for known spam IP addresses?

Is it possible to set this up, already, or does someone have to customise something so that this can work with JR sites?

cleantalk.org can be integrated into Jamroom - it would just require a custom module that would take their API and use Jamroom's existing events to check the posted info via their API and then respond accordingly.

There may be other providers of similar services. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Depending on the price, I might eventually be able to sponsor a module for this. In principle, I would be happy to.

However, I have some other spending priorities for my site, so letting the discussion continue here is the best next step, from my point of view.

In the process of developing a module like this, would it be feasible, desirable and cost-effective to make it compatible with more than one kind of spam-detecting service?

I can imagine situations where one service might be ideal for screening certain kinds of spam, and another service might be ideal for screening other kinds of spam.

Could a "Contact Form Spam-Interception" module be designed from the start to accommodate a range of interception services (perhaps two or three at most?). Or would this be technically not possible, or expensive, or not really needed or useful?

A module could be designed where the spam detection services are 'plugins' and you could then select any, or all of them. My initial thought though is that for every comment it would be waiting for responses from three APIs so you might see a bit of slowness creeping in.

Thanks.

I do have that installed, and enabled for the quotas where members can post material.

However, the module does not appear to cover forms, which sit outside the quota system (as far as I can see).
