solved During import from Ning to JR, what happens to attached documents (e.g. pdf files)?

My impression is that many photos and attachments associated with content in my former Ning site were held inside the Ning hosting system, and were not or could not be transferred with the .json files.

This has resulted in many broken image files where images were embedded in text, and broken download links to pdf files that are no longer present.

Or has everything actually been transferred, and I am just not seeing these materials?

In any case, it does no harm for me to review all the site content, then scrap and rebuild as necessary, though it is a slow process.

The reason this is happening is that the links INSIDE your items still point to your NING site. You need to run the "Update Base URL" Tool from the ACP -> Ning Import Tools section.

Jamroom cannot transfer items that were NOT on your NING system (of course).

Thanks. This will certainly be useful.

Part of my problem is that I have undoubtedly imported links that were already dead, so that changing the base URL will not bring them back to life.

In the lovely new JR site, I have many years of chaff to winnow out, not to mention entire bundles of rotting straw.

I will call this thread solved, for the moment. Thanks.

Yes I hear you- many older links were already dead on my ning site, and many images embedded in old discussion threads didn't get brought over to my JR cause they weren't actually residing in my ning site.
I used the occasion to jettison a whole lot of old defunct members- like 2000 out of my 5000 accumulated members of 7 years. Their content and posts got removed along with those long-gone members...so that actually cleared out a lot of those broken embeds. There is something good to be said for sweeping out bundles of rotting straw, PJ. ;)

During the first several months of going live, I got a few minor complaints from members about 'broken' embedded images and links here and there , but after that my members got involved in making new posts and interacting in new ways on the new site. It's a year and a half later now and I just never hear about it anymore. We've all moved on and are too busy enjoying the new site. :)

Perfectly stated!

@Strumelia, thanks for your wisdom, too. Good to read from the voice of experience.
