What do you use when you have new members join and why? I want to make it easy enough for real people but tricky enough for spammers and other nasty creatures....

Instant Validation - The new user account and profile are activated on signup.
Email Validation - An activation email is sent on signup to activate the new account.
Admin Validation - New users will be put into the PENDING tab of the dashboard for an admin user to approve.

I use Admin Validation because my site is for a specific group of people. It also avoids random spammers.

Instant Validation is IMHO going to be a nightmare.

Email Validation is a bit better especially if they must join as some type of "new member" quota where they don't have many (any?) actual posting priviledges. You can then move them ot a quota with more functionality once you establish a bit of trust.

I absolutely use Admin validation. Plus a few anti-spammer type signup questions. My members put a lot of value in feeling very safe on my site.
Plus, when you get an admin validation notification, it gives you the applicant's IP address, so you can run a quick check to see if they're actually located in some dubious country when they claim to be located somewhere else.
