investigating Groups not showing from profile pages (only from dropdown)

I hope I can explain this.

When a non-master admin member clicks on the 'groups' tab from his/her profile page [tested with 2 'standard' members], this is what we see (attachment).

But when these same members use the subtabs seen from hovering over their name, and click on "groups you follow", the groups we've joined are there.

How do we get the groups to populate when we click on the profile tab, too?

Thanks,

Got a URL? I'll try to setup here to see if I can replicate what you are seeing, but steps to reproduce are always helpful to speed me along. :)

When I'm logged out and try to view a group that im not a member of and that group is NOT private, I can see the group.

If I change the state of the group to private, when I am logged out I get asked to login before continuing.

If I then click the JOIN GROUP button the group will show in my "Groups you follow" section, but I cant access it until I'm approved. While not approved I see "your application to join this group is currently pending"

So Im not seeing what you are seeing. check the privacy settings for the group, and maybe the quota settings for the group, could be related.

Has 'Holly' or 'elizabeth-t' created any groups?

Hmm... Holly, do you understand that in the drop down list under the member's name where it says "Groups you follow", it lists exactly that: groups you are a member of.
But if you are on a Profile page and click that member's "Groups" tab, it will show you the Groups that member has CREATED (or "owns").

There's a little background about how we got this far in this thread from a year and a half ago:
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/26650/changing-what-shows-in-the-groups-tab-on-profile-pages/search_string=groups+you+follow ...kind of an interesting thread to read that addresses a few related issues on this.

I also seem to recall that possibly Curtis https://www.jamroom.net/derrickhand300 did wind up coding it so that a set of group avatars showed in a little grid on a member's profile page sidebar- the Groups the member belonged to. But now I can't find that thread here.

Holly, note that when you click in the "Groups you follow" drop down link, your'e taken to an URL that ends with .....com/group/my_groups. That's for groups you are a member of, not groups you created.

@Strumelia Yes. You understand exactly where I'm coming from (from a Ning perspective). I had forgotten/not realized that the groups tab would show CREATED groups rather than joined groups.

@Michael. No. (Strumelia guessed my goof).

But from the link that Strumelia shared [https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/26650/changing-what-shows-in-the-groups-tab-on-profile-pages] , Brian said:

Quote: One thing I think that is important to know is that YOU see the "blank" groups area on a profile page since you are technically the "profile owner" (as admin). Visitors to the page will NOT see the "groups" option unless there are actual groups to show - so you don't need to worry about a "blank" groups section.

But. On my 'alter ego' profile (as a standard user), I DO see this 'blank groups page' when I click on the groups tab.

This will be a huge challenge for us unless we can somehow KEEP the "groups I follow" option in the dropdown while NOT showing the 'groups' tab on their profile tab menu. Is this possible (to 'hide' a tab from a quota's view?).

Out of our hundreds of members, only a handful have created or will create any new groups. Our members are 99%+ non-native English speakers.
Having this "groups" tab "in their face" take them to a blank gray wall may well bewilder and/or frustrate many.

Holly, I hear you, but:
the way it's set up, a regular member will see a TAB (say for Photos/Images) on their own profile page even if they have not added any photos yet- but they'll see a big PLUS(+) button there when they click on the Tab. If you have DISABLED that quota from being able to create groups on their own (as I have in my site as well), then the only difference is the Plus button will not show to them. The idea of having the tab there even if they don't have any photos is to encourage members to add some when they see the Plus button in the blank tab area.

But YES, I see your point in not wanting the profile page TAB for Groups (or Images, Audio, etc) to SHOW for a member at all IF you have disabled their quota from even being able to create/add that type of item. That it frustrates and confuses the member. So to clarify... THAT is what you are asking to be able to somehow achieve- to HIDE the TAB if that quota is not allowed to add or create that type of item anyway.

One possible complication I immediately think of concerning this though- the ning members you import over...some of them will perhaps already have items they added while on your Ning site...that your new site now prohibits them from creating or adding for the future. If you HIDE the Tab from them, they then will not be able to see/access their own items anymore then... this could cause issues if your proposal was implemented globally. So this might be a custom code thing just for your site, to avoid such issues from effecting others' sites.

Yes, you're getting what I want Strumelia, but I think I can avoid the challenge you're referring to by putting those very few members into a different quota.

Our MAIN MEMBERS quota is the ONLY one I would like to hide 'groups' tab from appearing on their profile pages.

We are using the awesome-and-perfect-for-us solution of jrDiscussions (not the Forum that comes in the core) and THAT is where 90% (plus/minus) of public site activity will be.

If anyone wants to inquire about setting up a private group, they could easily do so there. http://lewwwpcom.jamroomhosting.com/community/discussion-categories

Then I would just have to move them to a new quota.

If that could happen for ONE quota only, I'd be thrilled.

Thanks,
Holly

I'm just guessing here, and the JR Team will need to answer definitively on it (and with any coding suggestions)- but I think now you're getting a bit too specified and it could be rather complex- I think your possible option might be in hiding the TAB from ALL quotas that have the create ability turned off for a particular type item. You'd control WHICH quotas by simply turning their 'create item' ability on/off...not by some checkbox next to a particular quota for example. I'm doubting whether you could easily additionally choose just ONE particular quota if more than one quota has the ability to create/add turned off. Perhaps the JR Team will chime in now that it;s clearer what you are wanting to do. :)

If you want to hide your Groups form JUST the "main members" quota, in the ACP -> Profiles -> Groups -> Quota Config tab select the "main members" quota from the "Selected Quota" select form field, then UNCHECK the "Allowed on Profile" option and save.

That will disable groups in that quota - that means the "groups" menu option will not show on their profile pages.

Right. BUT when I tested that, it also made the "groups I follow" (dropdown option from their profile name) disappear.

I was thinking I wanted this option to remain.

hmmmm....

Let me try phrasing my challenge this way.

Only a very few members have created groups/will create groups.

A far greater number of members belongs to at least one private group (some members belong to several private groups).

If I delete groups from the main category quota, then HOW would those members who ARE in private groups FIND those private groups (other than going to the tab from the main menu bar of the site, which would take them to ALL private groups)?

I could create a separate quota for all members who belong in a private group... it would be tedious initially, but then would simply mean that we would need to make it a habit to switch quotas any time a member joins a private group.

hmmmm.... I'll ponder this some more.
Thank you to everyone for your replies ~

I have used language editor to relabel the tab "Groups I created" (it's lengthier than I'd like, but it should help resolve some confusion).

The longer I'm on Jamroom, the more i figure out how to put the 'Languages editor' tabs to various great uses. ;)

Thats not right. If you follow groups that link should be there in your user menu. Looks like a bug.

The user will always be able to see the groups they follow from the:
your-site.com/group/my_groups

Regardless of whether they can CREATE groups or not.

Needs fixing.
