i have had a couple vids that wont convert
since i cant attach the vid i uploaded it here
http://www.flatearthdebunked.com/trumpbernie.mp4
(note i renamed the file the original had - and _ which i thought may be the issue)
you see it plays just fine without errors
i have the settings set to 2 workers and priority high
but even though its a pretty short vid it wont convert and has attempted 3 or 4 times with fails
(i know i know its ridiculous in this day and age that that domain needs to exist)
can you save link as and attempt to convert on a dev site i don't know if its server database or site related
this isn't the only video that would not convert either
(is there anything i can do to test the vid for errors that might alow it to play, but not convert?)

Check your activity log and see what the actual error being reported is - click on the small ? (question mark button over to the right and it will contain the output from ffmpeg - that will give you an idea of what it doesn't like.

what can i search for
ive gone through 600 404's (mostly from old ning structure I'm assuming bots) i searched for ffmpeg and trump but found no results
searched video i found this deleted video_conversions queue entry running for 14401 seconds - 3rd time failing
and i scrolled back to the 1st of the month
searching queue got all similar results (forum verify_db also always fails when i run integrity check it just never completes)
searching conversion i just get 2 like above the deleted it after 3 fails no explanation no questionmark (red not yellow)
and damn just spent an hour trying to find the red error by seas arching thertime stamps, its not chronologically where it should be
i figured thered be an error before it that would give me a clue
attached is whole log if its not too big
it is its 29 megs ill upload it

If you are not seeing any activity log entry errors for it, then it means it is likely "bombing" the conversion process, so it cannot log the error.

I'll try a test conversion on it here and let you know if I see an issue.

No problems converting here:

[system] converted 1/7/video_file from mp4 in 63.4 seconds

Are you using the ffmpeg that comes with JR or a different ffmpeg binary?

Then it should work - I don't see any problems with it on this end. Could there be something running on your server that could make it run really slow?

Remember - almost every request to Jamroom goes through router.php, so you will likely see that as the top JR script.

If you are running nginx and php-fpm, double check your conf files and make sure nothing would be restricting CPU usage or timing things out. I see no problems here, so it is something specific to your server. Try a separate JR install if you can and see if it works there.

Unfortunately we can't offer any direct server support outside of JR hosting - sorry!

fixed it!!!
using these instructions reinstalled ffmpeg
https://chrisjean.com/install-ffmpeg-and-ffmpeg-php-on-centos-easily/
what i saw was, resetting the worker caused the ffmpeg to show in process list for a split second then disappear
over and over so i assumed a dependency was not working right
reinstalling the system version of ffmpeg reinstalled all dependencies and packages..and now its converting

is there an error in the server error logs when ffmpeg "runs a split second and fails"?

That might provide some hints.

none at all
but the 1 process trace that was running and ended prematurely ended with
futex(0x10ea27dc, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1
futex(0x10ea2780, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 219, NULL) = 0

futex(0x10ea27f4, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 0
+++ killed by SIGKILL +++

but now resetting worker on the other video seems to be progressing still
i will update in the morning i think it maybe fixed but npt 100% sure so changing solved to investigating
i think its solved but not 100% certain yet

after over 24 hours its no longer in queue but never converted, no error messages anywhere
always process killed
i read up and that's usually the result of memory over allocation but that's impossible as memory use was low! like 20%
i have 32 gigs ram, 1 vids 23 mb the other 0.2 gb
although it says 'conversion workers will use 100% of 1 core' the use was 102-103%
maybe that extra couple percent overloaded the core and caused the kill?
you know i should have 1 of the fastest servers on jr
(buying 1 soon with more cores)
i cant understand why its killing it I'm going to attempt lowest then highest proprieties
edit: it was already on lowest priority ..ugh

that said not found
then the next part
cd /opt
git clone git://git.videolan.org/x264.git
cd x264
./configure --prefix="$HOME/ffmpeg_build" --bindir="$HOME/bin" --enable-static
make
make install
keeps resulting in network timeouts

ps the host I'm wiith had excellent support when i was starting off
they claim to have the best support around
but its gone way downhill fast
(i cant wait to have my own server though not sure I'm ready to manage it solo)

soaringeagle:....i just installed newest version today.....
did you read the conversation in that link?

Quote: My web host sent me this:

root@host3 ~# ffmpeg -version
FFmpeg version SVN-r26402, Copyright (c) 2000-2011 the FFmpeg developers
built on May 6 2014 12:42:26 with gcc 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-54)

I'm not that technical, but doesn't this show a recent build?

Quote: It means that ffmpeg binary was built on May 6, 2014, but based on libraries that are old .

The analogy would be you have blue prints for a "Ford Model T" car circa ~1910 , and build that clunker on May 6, 2014 . It's ancient by today's standards.

Your version reads:
Quote: Data FFmpeg version 0.6.5, Copyright (c) 2000-2010 the FFmpeg developers
built on Jan 29 2012
so its even older than the one in that thread.

ok i have been trying to get help from centos support, my hosting companies support cpanel support etc etc etc

it seems like the only helpful answer came from the cpanel top tier support

what they said was that installing and compiling ffmpegs not hard its simple (even though i don't know why installing new versions several diferent ways never changed the very old outdated version number)
they said the real issues always finding the right codecs and configs to work with the ffmpeg your using

so... back to that
what codecs are required by the ffmpeg used by jamroom, what versions
any special config options

you can run any commands against the prepackaged version in jamroom, found at:
/modules/jrCore/tools/ffmpeg

Mine gives this output for: ffmpeg -version
:~/sites/jr500.hostsaba.com/public_html/modules/jrCore/tools$ ./ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg version N-50408-gdc666d3
built on Feb 28 2013 23:01:11 with gcc 4.3.2 (Debian 4.3.2-1.1)
configuration: --enable-shared --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-nonfree --enable-hardcoded-tables --cc=cc --host-cflags= --host-ldflags= --enable-libx264 --enable-libfaac --enable-libmp3lame
libavutil 52. 17.103 / 52. 17.103
libavcodec 54. 92.100 / 54. 92.100
libavformat 54. 63.102 / 54. 63.102
libavdevice 54. 3.103 / 54. 3.103
libavfilter 3. 41.100 / 3. 41.100
libswscale 2. 2.100 / 2. 2.100
libswresample 0. 17.102 / 0. 17.102
libpostproc 52. 2.100 / 52. 2.100

Why not use the current version of ffmpeg which is included by the jamroom core module?

i am using the version in jamroom
i said i have tried against both versions
the jr version process in process manager completes
but then nothing happens
also on review i cant find where that 0.6.5 versions coming from, the day i set the server up we installed 2.2
since then i installed 3.2

the jr version works closest to right but not right
they said most likely its a codec issue and i do not see codecs bundled with jr
so the jr versions not liking the codec versions i have installed
if i remove ffmpeg and all dependencies from the server will the jr version run as a standalone

but

update
tested music conversion
it went extremely fast ..no trouble (only have it set to mp3 not ogg since ogg did not play at all if firefox but generated errors)
so
that narrows it down to a video codec
can't the codecs be bundled with jr ffmpeg and jr ffmpeg be configured to only use the codecs bundled in the core?

send me the file your using. if it converts on my dev server with just the jamroom version of ffmpeg, then its not a problem with ffmpeg, its a problem somewhere else.

My dev server is setup using the same instructions as are found here:

"High performace Jamroom on Digital Ocean"
https://www.jamroom.net/brian/documentation/guides/1188/high-performance-jamroom-on-digitalocean

it converted on..1 of the dev servers, wasn't yours, but if you scroll up youll see it did
so, theres no need for any codecs, any version of ffmpeg anything like that installed on the server at all?
i don't dsee anything about ffjmpeg in that guide at all
so i should just uninstall all of that the codecs and everything

ps searching remove ffmpeg or uninstall ffmpeg only gives results for how to install it
nothing for removal

omg holding breath but i believe its fixed
ok heres what i had to do
go into the source folder for the new version i tried installing make uninstall
then
yum remove ffmpeg-libpostproc
that gave me errors in a rpm file that had leading spaces
removed the spaces reran
ffmpeg 0.6.5 gone
ran converter but it acted diferent
id have 1 process then 3 then 1 then 3 then 1 then 3 then 1 then none
thought it finished but no still

i believe all i have to do now us make uninstall each and every codec

/etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo
