Group Member count incorrect

We've just noticed the member count for groups are incorrect. For example, one group is showing 2 members (which doesn't include the owner of the group), when it actually has over 40.

Have tried doing an integrity check with no effect and also checked using a raw ningJa skin to make sure it wasn't a template problem.

Have no idea when this started happening. It was a member who brought it to our attention.

Don't know if this is related, but-
I had a ticket last week because just ONE of my 60 groups mysteriously lost all its 106 members except the group owner. (I'm on a customized ningja skin) The members' group content was all still there and complete, but members had been 'unjoined' somehow. I have no idea if my occurrence is related to yours at all, but possibly so. I don't think the cause was found, but the members were retrieved through a backup on my AWS S3. (It wasn't detected for about a week, so I didn't quite have an old enough backup on Jamroom)

I almost seem to remember some pruning feature that I had to turn off in JR4? I wonder if that is still around in JR5? I may need to check on that too...

Unfortunately we only hold 7 days worth of database backups and the problem occurred before then!

I have a three month old database the test site runs on which looks OK though, so we could always go back to that for the members if we had to.

I initially thought the problem could be with a module update but I apply the updates to the test site first and thats OK.

I noticed a brand new Group Support update of:

Profile Groups module changelog
Version 1.4.4:
- Bug Fix: in rare instance "group_members" could be corrupted if JSON does not decode correctly

---was this update specifically correcting the recent problem we had with 'disappearing' group members?
