Is anyone having issues with the 'Remember me' not working ?

I brought this up before just after we migrated from Ning as we had a few users with problems but these subsided after a while. https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/using-jamroom/31750/remember-me-not-working

It's reared its head again of late with a lot of people who have upgraded to windows 10 having problems with IE11, Edge and Firefox browsers ( but no problems with Chrome ! ) though we've got an Apple user who says it doesn't work for him either and someone on Windows 7 where it doesn't work on IE11 but is OK on Chrome again !

We've tested across the following systems with 'Remember me' working as it should :-

- OS X ( Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera )
- Windows 7 (IE10, IE11, Chrome and Firefox)
- Windows 10 ( E11, Edge and Firefox )
- iPad 3 - iOS ( Safari and Chrome )
- Android ( Chrome )

(Login, close browser and then back to the site)

Have tried going through the usual stuff ie clear your cookies, login and then logout to force the deletion of the cookie but they are still having problems and problems only with our site.

Having a look on the net there does seem to be problem with users who have upgraded to Windows 10 having problems with cookies in everything but Chrome but these people are having problems with every site not just one in particular.

Anybody got any suggestions cos we're stumped :(

Cheers

Dave

The users that are seeing an issue may need to make sure they are not deleting cookies when they close their browser.

The users are saying the problem is only with our site. Other sites they visit are working OK.

Without a way to see it happening we can only guess at it. I've not seen this happening it always works fine here.

The only guess I can think of is:
* do you have both an https:// address and a http:// address? If so, then if visit the http:// site then it will show as not logged in. Going to the https:// site fixes it.

eg:
here on jamroom.net if I go to this page on the http site, I'm not logged in.

http ://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/33734/remember-me-cookie-problems
https ://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/33734/remember-me-cookie-problems

but on the https site I am. Now I always go to the https site and its all working as expected.

Cant think of any other guesses that seam plausible.

Not running https at the moment so not that but may be doing that in the future when https://letsencrypt.org/ goes live and we can get the cert for free! I'd then force http to redirect to https

As far as I'm concerned the problem is on client side but the client just keeps blaming us !

That sucks. Feel for you.

Thanks for the heads up on the letsencrypt coming service. they have a "Apply to get a certificate as part of our beta program" on this page:

We have had some similar complaints recently. Users get very grouchy about this. Our instances seemed to result from updating IE. Chrome works fine.

I have found a convincing Microsoft forum which says that IE 10 and 11 use different cookie handling to IE9. While IE9 keeps you logged in, with IE10 & 11 you get logged out after a variable number of hours.
After extensive testing it appears that this is due to Symantec Endpoint protection and Symantec Norton Antivirus which delete the session cookies at time of scan.

See forum here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/ie-10-11-win-7-x64-does-not-keep-you-logged-in/2c4e2619-d2dc-4f1e-bebe-d186f3621963
