Should 'Reply to a comment' generate a notification?

When User-A comments on something posted by User-B (an image, for example), the comment is shown with a REPLY link in it. If User-B responds to the comment using the REPLY, no notification is generated for User-A. User-A will be unaware of the response, unless he/she happens to revisit the item that was commented on.
Is this what is intended, or is it something that's not working on our site?

If this is normal, can you please explain how we might generate notifications for Replies? Thank you.

Intended:
The owner of the profile can be notified when new comments are left on things that are on their profile if they like.

As I'm understanding you: If the item is on Tom's profile and Sarah writes a comment, then Daisy replies to Sara, you're wanting Sarah to be notified that Daisy has replied to her.

I'll look into it.

@Michael - yes, that's right. In your example, we'd like a notification when anyone (including Tom) replies to Sarah.
We already have notifications to a profile for comments on items owned by that profile (with an option in account settings to stop notifications).
Thanks for looking.

Lorna, just an aside so you know, since we were discussing this in the other thread-
I believe I don't have the "reply" options on my site because I do not have "enable threading" checked for my Comments module. On my site, I prefer instead to have a "comment back" button for profile page comments. That's why your and my site are a little different in regards to quotes/replies/comments etc, and it's why we are inquiring about different feature options. :)

@strumelia - thank very much for that info - really helpful!
Do your users get notified when someone "comments back" on an item?

Can we have threading enabled in groups discussions (and perhaps forums), but not on Profile pages and Image detail pages, where a "comment back" would seem preferable?

If we were to change from threads to 'comment back', would the existing 'reply' threads disappear? I assume so.

I am looking for a way to notify people whenever someone addresses a remark to them, so if this can be done within the existing system, that would be great.

You can enable comment threading in the User Comments module if you need threading - just note that it will enable threading on ALL comments throughout the site.

Not with Forums - by their nature a forum is already "threaded".

If you turn on comment threading, then comments are threaded everywhere (for consistency I would think this is what you want).

What is "comment back"?

We do have a ticket open on this to notify users is a user "replies" to their comment.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your very full response, @Brian.
When I referred to 'comment back', I meant the system that @strumelia mentioned in her comment above. I assumed that's what you get if you don't enable threading, but I now realise that is probably a new feature that Strumelia is asking for.

Basically, we both would like people to be notified when someone responds to their comment. For me it would be the notification when someone "replies", so I'm glad you have a ticket for that. For anyone who hasn't enabled threading, it would be a "comment back" button (hope that's right, @strumelia).

Yeah we should have a solution for "replying" to a comment - however, if you're NOT using comment threading, then right now the way it works is it will let the owner of the item (say an image) know that a user has commented on their item. Without threading there is no way for Jamroom to "know" the difference between a NEW comment on an item, and a reply to a comment on an item - does that make sense? The only alternative in that case would be to email every user that commented on the item (since as far as JR can tell it could be a response to ANY comment).

Let me know if that helps.

As it happens, that's what Ning used to do. You had to 'un-follow' the item if you didn't want notifications whenever anyone else commented. It was very unsatisfactory.

If you can identify a 'reply' in a comment thread, (or provide a "comment back" on un-threaded comments) and get a notification to the originator, that would be infinitely better than the Ning system.
