in progress redundant notifications in Groups

I just realized that I get two notifications every time someone posts in a group discussion I'm following.
I think it's because the 'discussions' in Group are not like the Froum discussions, in that responses to a Group discussion are really COMMENTS, not forum posts.
Thus, when I Follow a Group discussion, I get a notification email saying "Discussion updated" (coming from the jrGroupDiscuss module's email_discussion_updated_message template).... and I ALSO get one titled "New Comment On.." (coming from the jrGroup Module email_notify_message template).

Please see the screenshots showing how these two emails are different and triggered by two different events, but they are redundantly notifying me of the same post (comment) someone made in a group discussion I am following.
Perhaps a good thing to get sorted out? I'd prefer to receive ONLY the one titled "Discussion Updated", since it confuses folks to think of group discussions posts as 'comments'.

Think I've got this fixed, just need the others to check it out. Its a real issue that needs fixing, just want to make sure the way its fixed is in line with how we want it to work.

Once its got the OK, it the marketplace will be updated.

Thanks for finding that bug. :)

Sorry, but it's still happening Michael.

Just got one that starts with:

[fotmd.com] New Comment on "I'll be away during..."
A new comment has been posted by Jan Potts:
Dusty, I'm glad that some of the dulcimer folks from out east are finally making their way to you--

and also at the exact same time, one the reads:

[fotmd.com] Discussion Updated: "I'll be away during..."
A Discussion you are following has been updated:

@strumelia, are you the owner of the group, or is the discussion one that you have started, or is this just someone else's discussion that you have followed?

I noticed getting double notifications a while ago, but I found that I had clicked Follow on a discussion that 'belonged' to me. When I un-followed it, I only got a single notification. (This is in my Admin user).

So, you will get notifications as the owner of the group. If I remember correctly, it is possible to click the Follow icon on the discussion, even if you created it. If you have done that, I think that's why you are getting 2 notifications. This may just happen in Admin users.
I'll have to test this out again, but as an Admin, I have created discussions in other users' groups and I have to follow those discussions to get notifications of updates. But if I create a discussion in my own group, I don't have to follow it to get a notification. If I do follow it, I get 2 notifications.

I own about 50 groups, but do not get discussion notifications on all those (nor would I want to!)

Lorna, in your last sentence, when you say you get 2 notifications- is one concerning a new 'comment' and the other about an updated 'discussion'...but both are about the same thing that was posted? (see my above screenshots)

Sorry for the delay in responding.
I've discarded those messages some time ago, so I'm not exactly sure, but I remember they were two different formats, so it's likely they were as you describe.
I attach a screenshot of one of my discussions, showing that I am not Following, but I do get notifications for it, of the form ...

I've now clicked Follow in that discussion. For the next comment posted, I received 2 notifications, as you have described - one says New Comment and the other is Discussion Updated.

@strumelia, Sorry if I was vague. I'm trying to explain that the only circumstance when I get a redundant notification of the kind you have described, is when I own the group and the group discussion AND I have also 'followed' the discussion explicitly by clicking the circle icon.

I'm puzzled as to why you don't get notifications for all those discussions you started in groups you own... Have you turned off those notifications in your account settings?

Hmm...I see what you are saying now...thnx for the explanation.

I need to look at all the factors at work here for me:

1) I've created about 50 groups, almost all created before I migrated in from Ning, and I have not gone back to 'follow' any of the old discussions I created in those groups.

2) The Moderator private group i created long ago, however, has discussions recently created by me, that I am also now following. I'll now unfollow those discussions and see if I then get only one notification.

3) My members are the ones who create most discussions in the groups I set up for them long ago. So it could be the discussions I created in those groups simply aren't being posted to anymore. I'll ask a friend to post to one of those old discussions of mine to see if I get notified.

I'll report back here with the results from 1) and 2) when I get results. :)

Ok, so I seem to be getting ONE notification for a new post in ANY discussion in groups i created...whether I created that discussion or someone else did. The notification says: "A new comment has been posted by ____:"....so it's one of the 'comment' type notifications.

Now that I 'unfollowed' a discussion in a group i created, I'm only getting the ONE 'comment' type notification, and NOT also getting the "Discussion Updated:A Discussion you are following has been updated:" notification.

This is confusing, but admittedly fascinating! But I can envision it creating frustration for many folks in years to come. Maybe there's a way to simplify how the system works from within the Group support code to make it more elegant for everyone. ?
