Allowing members into groups

We are beta testing my site, and what I have run across is that there seems to be no way to manage members in groups. Is there something that I am missing?

What do you mean by 'manage' them?

Hi Strumelia,
In Ning, when an owner of a group wanted to either let members into private groups or delete members from groups, etc, they could go to Options>Manage Group Members. I don't see how to do that here for the owners of the groups. Neither do my beta testers and I tried to find it in the Jamroom forum, but couldn't.

Not sure what you wanting to manage, but it sounds like the 'user config' settings is what your after.

Go to the group, then click on the "view all members" button and you will see each member has a 'user config' link under their name for the owner of the group. That gives you some control over individual users.

Thanks Michael. That solves some of my question. But how does owner of a private group let a new member in and how do you send out invites?

Jamroom doesn't have an Invite module, I know Paul had been working on one some time ago but don't know what stage he got it too.

Ohooo... So how as an admin can you send out multiple invites? You can't do it with private notes, since it only allows for one person at a time.

Yes, you can send out an invite to multiple users... go to your yoursite.com/invite/browse and create an invitation, if you haven't already, then after it is created click the invitations button on the yoursite.com/invite/browse screen, that will allow you to choose multiple users to invite.

Hmm...when i go to http://fotmd.com/invite/browse or to http://fotmd.com/invite/ ...I get a Page Not Found message.

Is 'invite' a module, or a Site-Builder-only thing?

Invite is a module that we started developing some time ago but was never completed or released as it would have been an open invitation to users to spam each other. Users can message their followers. Allowing users to message all other users will be abused.

Well that explains the Page Not Found.
Which is why an "Invite" module would really need to have a 'per quota' control. That way we could set it to be usable by admins only, or by (paying) advertiser quota members, moderators, etc.

I'm thinking Admins can use the Newsletter module- but can we set a newsletter to go out only to members we hand select? (in addition to the choice of sending it out to entire quotas).

What I was talking about was an invite function that only admins to the groups could use. Same thing with Newsletters from the admins of groups, not something the average member could abuse. Since it was in the works, does it mean that at least some of the code was written?

I still think this should be released, make it a premium module then admins have to make the decision. Just don't do something because it might open up spam opportunities, every community reacts differently.

Let me take a look again at the Invite module to see what it does and whether it might do what you want. It was complete iirc but was put on the shelf because of its potential as a spamming tool. Perrie, maybe we can check it out on your test site?

I'd love to do that, Paul. I am in the middle of beta testing and it would be the perfect time to do that!

Have installed this module on your site. Its in the ACP=>Users section. You'll need to enable it per quota, users will then see the Invite tool in the drop-down on their user name. Let me know how you get on with it.

one of the objections to releasing it was from me. I get

"(Someone you don't know) has invited you to join (some site you've never heard of)" emails all the time.

I know in the case of some of them the "click here to unsubscribe" is actually collecting my email address so I end up on more lists I don't want to be on. So my usual move is to tag it as spam and let gmail's spam algorithm add that site to their list of 'suspicious'.

Too many people do this and you'll find your site ends up not being able to deliver legitimate email like new users signup application emails.

Michael,
Only the admins of a group should be able to invite to a group. I have many special interest groups, and some invites, but not so many that I need to spam them.

Paul,
When I go to ACP=>Users section, I don't see where I am supposed to make this change. I was going to do this to "Rene" (which is really me) but I don't any way to enable this for this account.

As this is about a currently unreleased module let's take it to email so as not to confuse anyone else reading this :-)
