Is there a way to set the site so that I can approve membership? I have an issue with a lot of sock puppets.

You'll get an email. You then go to http://yoursite.com/core/dashboard/pending_users to activate or delete them. They will then get an appropriate email.

Which kind of leads me to my next question. I just tested my newsletter, and it didn't work. I am worried that I won't get these notifications.

I suspect that your mailgun account is set up for your actual domain and not the sandbox we are currently using. It'll come right when you set your domain name servers to point to JR hosting.
