Big changes to Google’s search algorithms are coming: beginning April 21, the company will increase the ranking of sites that are mobile-friendly and surface app results much higher.

The company says that the change will have a “significant impact” on all mobile searches in all languages worldwide, but as a result Google says that users will find higher quality results.

Along with this change, Google will start to use more information from indexed apps as a factor when ranking search results for users that are signed-in and have the app installed.

These changes are great news for mobile users as it should help motivate those sites that still don’t have a mobile site to actually build one. Google started highlighting mobile-friendly sites in results last year.

Site admins who want to test their site’s mobile compatibility can use Google’s tools to quickly evaluate the status of a page.

I tested the JR site when I saw the article and it passed. Mobile is important, I think this is a good move for Google.

I tested my skin, which is at its base Mediapro and it passed just fine. What I should add is the beta launch plugin is not mobile ready and if you have this activated when this goes live it will hurt in the short to medium term.

What's not mobile ready about the beta launch module? I can check it out.

✕ Content wider than screen is what it reported, the wrap element is fixed to 600px wide.

Anything with an image slider on mobile Google considers not mobile friendly. Mainly because the page links are too close together. In my opinion, the image slider should not be shown on mobile devices.

Beta launch doesn't have a slider though... it's just a background image + notify me form.

Ah, I read his post wrong. Not sure what would cause Google to not like it, there isn't much to the beta launch page is there?

Years ago I spent tons of time and a little money trying to Optimize for Google and in the end I actually fell in he rankings- since then I make stuff that people like and enjoy..sliders music...anything....and forget about this part of optimization for search engines....although I still try to use best practices on image tags meta tags etc....but as far as content I just build it for the user..I always figured if it was cool they would find it

The bg class has a min-width set to 1024px, that is what Google is complaining about on the Beta Launch page, the content is wider than the screen.
